Get Ready For The Ship Custom-Built For The “Most Extreme Conditions On The Planet”

It has just been revealed that a third hybrid-powered expedition cruise ship has been ordered by Hurtigruten, specially designed with an ice-strengthened hull.

The 530-passenger vessel is set for delivery by summer 2021 and will be custom built for some of the most extreme conditions on the planet.

Hurtigruten CEO Daniel Skjeldam said: This groundbreaking vessel will take our guests to some of the most spectacular areas of our planet, in a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly way than ever seen before.”

The new ship’s design, construction, engineering and advanced technology will be based on the cruise line’s two next-generation ships, MS Roald Amundsen and MS Fridtjof Nansen.

Bpth are currently under construction at the Norwegian Kleven Verft ship yard.

Skjeldam continued: “We are thrilled to introduce yet another revolutionary hybrid powered expedition ship.

These are greener, more advanced cruise ships than the world has ever seen– and ships that will raise standards for the whole industry to follow, as we enter a new era of expedition cruising driven by sustainability.”

Guest can expect substantially larger battery packs to make expedition voyages even more sustainable.

“We strongly believe that Hurtigruten, and our responsible and innovative approach to sustainable solutions, is the perfect fit for the modern-day explorer.

Hurtigruten is experiencing a substantial global growth. The expansion we have seen so far, is just the beginning,” Skjeldam added.

The line announced in February this year their decision to push back the arrival date of new expedition ship Roald Amundsen by a year.

It was intended it would debut in July 2018, but is now scheduled to launch in May 2019. Roald Amundsen has been designed by Rolls-Royce and named after one of the most influential Norwegian polar pioneers.

“It is exactly 105 years since Roald Amundsen became the first person in the world to plant his flag on the South Pole. What could be more natural and appropriate than to name our new ships after these inspiring trailblazers,” said Skjeldam.
