Germany is now Europe’s Biggest Cruise Market

Move over Britain – Germany has more cruisers now!

The number of British cruisers taking to the ocean fell by almost 100,000 between 2013 and 2014, while German passengers have contined to increase, with  over 1.7million Germans taking an ocean cruise in 2014 (compared with the UK’s 1.6million) making the country Europe’s biggest cruise market.

In order, the current top five cruise markets in Europe are currently Germany, the UK, Italy, France and Spain.

International cruise body CLIA say that the cruise industry contributed over £2.2billion to the UK economy in 2014, rising year-on-year.

In addition to that, cruising created 800 jobs in the UK in 2014, rising the overall number of cruise-sector jobs in the UK to a whopping 71,222.

CLIA’s UK & Ireland director Andy Harmer says the latest figures prove the UK benefits from the “multi-billion pound dividends” provided by the cruise industry.

Southampton also has figures to prove its popularity, continuing to be Europe’s largest embarkation and disembarkation point, despite over 100,000 less passengers using the port in 2014 when compared to 2013.
