Mixed Reviews As Cunard Announce They Are Relaxing Dress Codes

Cunard fans have been left shocked after the cruise line announced that they are relaxing their dress codes.

The typically formal cruise line has long had a reputation for impeccably dressed guests and have a fairly strict dress code on-board.

However, Cunard have now revealed that sailings on the Queen Victoria in the Mediterranean this summer will have a relaxed dress code on embarkation night.

Cunard have said that this is because they want to accommodate guests embarking and disembarking in destinations such as Rome, Venice, Barcelona and Athens.

They said: “Guests will be flying to meet the ship from all over the world and arrival times on board may vary.”

Because of these varying times they may not have time to get changed for dinner, so the formal dress policy has been changed so that “no matter what time they arrive” they can dine and feel relaxed on-board.

It is thought that guests will still be expected to wear a dinner jacket or cocktail dress to dinner on the rest of their voyage.

But does this change in dress code policy signal a shift for Cunard in line with many cruise companies who seem to be opting for “informal” dress?

Celebrity cruises announced last year that they would be changing their formal evenings to “evening chic” nights. Here guests were no longer required to wear a jacket and tie and could opt for much more casual evening attire. We have often heard from guests in the past year who miss the formal evenings, but equally often hear that passengers prefer this more relaxed style.

NCL and Carnival have had casual dress codes for some time now. Is it likely that more and more cruise lines will continue to follow suit? Only time will tell!

What do you think of the news? Do you enjoy formal evenings and would you miss them if they disappeared from Cunard? Do you think that dress codes are an integral part of cruising or a dated formality? Let us know in the comments below…
