Cruisers Regret Lack of Insurance

If you’re thinking about going on a cruise holiday but have a pre-existing medical condition, it’s recommended you are fully insured before you travel.

According to research conducted by over-50s specialist Saga, eight per cent of individuals nearing retirement admitted to dipping into their pension fund to pay for a holiday.

But the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) warn that travel insurance options should be fully explored by those considering embarking on a cruise. This involves being aware of any costs that will come from not being sufficiently insured and providing insurers with the correct information about any medical conditions, both past and existing.

From April 6th 2015, pension regulations in the UK will change, meaning it will be more practical for over-50s to take money from their pension fund and put it towards luxuries like holidays.

Saga’s 2014 survey revealed that those aged over 50 were responsible for more than half of the UK’s expenditure on travel and tourism.

Roger Ramsden, chief executive of Saga Services, said:  “Buying adequate travel insurance should be the top of every holidaymaker’s list and something which should be carefully considered rather than rushed at the last minute, potentially leaving people inadequately covered.”

John Heppenstall, head of consular campaigns at the FCO, added: “By taking out the right travel insurance, the cost of emergency medical treatment should be covered if you become ill or are injured abroad.”

However, the FCO said holidaymakers should bear in mind the fact that the level of free public healthcare differs between countries, meaning they may not have access to the same types of treatment.

And for those travelling within Europe, a European Health Insurance Card is recommended. This means that the cost of emergency state healthcare for pre-existing medical conditions will be reduced.

Are you going on a cruise holiday this year? Have you arranged medical insurance?
