One of the largest travel agents in Japan, JTB Corporation, is chartering Sun Princess to be used as a floating hotel during the 2020 Olympic & Paralympic Games.
In the port of Yokohama, the Princess vessel will be berthed at Yamashita pier from July 23rd to August 10th 2020.
Real estate analysts predict a shortage of about 3,500 hotel rooms by the time the Olympics take place.
The arrangement for the 2,000-guest vessel to act as a floating hotel will “help ease a shortage of accommodations during the Olympics,” JTB President Hiroyuki Takahashi said.
In other news, baseball and softball competitions will be held in the Yokohama Stadium (a 10 minute walk from the pier), and several football games are also due to be played at International Stadium Yokohama.
Takahashi said at a press conference held on Diamond Princess berthed in Yokohama port that the company will organize events in and around the port and city during the Games for tourists and the local community so they feel part of the Olympic experience.
Cruise ship chartered for use as floating hotel have been used at past summer Olympic Games including Barcelona (1992), Sydney (2000) Athens(2004), London (2012) and Rio de Janeiro (2016), as well as the Vancouver Winter Olympics in 2010.
Yokohama Mayor, Fumiko Hayashi, has commented on the benefit of this for cruising: “The JTB plan will be a great opportunity to drive the popularity of cruises. I want guests to experience the charms of passenger vessels.”
JTB said it will offer staterooms at $273 to $2,730 per night based on category and a programme of dining and entertainment will take place.
The Tokyo metropolitan government is also exploring the possibility of a floating hotel option with MSC for the Olympics, sited at the Port of Tokyo.
