Cruise Lines Take All Precautions In Preparation For Major Hurricane Bud

It has just been announced that at least one cruise ship has been rerouted due to Hurricane Bud.

The Category 4 major hurricane is swirling off the coast of Puerto Vallarta with sustained wind speeds of 130 miles per hour, and is expected to make landfall in Cabo San Lucas as a tropical storm on Friday morning.

Carnival Splendor, which departed from Long Beach on June 9th, will replace its June 13th call on Puerto Vallarta with a sea day, its 6/14 sea day with a stop in Catalina Island and its June 15th sea day with a visit to Ensenada.

It skipped Cabo yesterday and is expected to return to Long Beach on June 16th as planned.

“In order to avoid the path of Hurricane Bud and remain a safe distance from the storm, Carnival Splendor that departed Long Beach on June 9th has changed its planned itinerary [… ] or the remainder of the seven-day cruise,” Carnival said in a statement.

The line has issued $200 in onboard credit, per cabin, as well as a 50% future cruise credit, as compensation to guests for the changes.

According to the National Hurricane Centre: “A weakening trend is expected to begin later today and continue through Thursday while Bud approaches southern Baja California Sur. Bud is forecast to weaken below hurricane intensity by Wednesday night.”

Whilst no official storm watches or warnings are in effect, the NHC warns that those in southern Baja California Sur, Mexico, should monitor Bud’s progress.

Bud is the second major hurricane to form in the Eastern North Pacific Ocean in less than a week.

Last Friday, Hurricane Aletta produced wind speeds up to 140 miles per hour but no cruise itineraries were affected by Hurricane Aletta.
