Fred Olsen Brabant – Day 2

Dinner on the first night was fantastic, a great choice of dishes and you could have as many or as little as you wanted.  The food was spectacular and we had a great meal.

The entertainment was a quiz which we took part and had good fun with the passengers, even helping them to win bottles of wine.  As we were in Germany the team names needed to be something to do with Germany so my team name was ‘Babs’ Bangers’ – I’ll just leave that one there……..

Speyer in Germany was our destination….

Speyer is one of the oldest German cities and has a beautiful old town, it has a lot to offer from the Imperial Cathedral and Memorial Church to the Altportel (old town gate) and the Jewish Courtyard signifying its Jewish legacy. With enough energy, you can climb the 154 steps to the top and be rewarded with stunning views on a clear day.  We didn’t have time to do this with having our excursion in the morning and shopping in the afternoon at Maximilianstrasse – the pedestrianised shopping strip.

On the morning of day 2, we had an early breakfast at 7.30 as we were heading off on an excursion.  We were off to visit a Technik Museum leaving the ship at 8.15am.  It was approx 10-15 minute walk from the ship and we were glad we went early got very busy later in the day.

This place was amazing, with every type of transport on display and even a real aircraft which you can go inside (after climbing about 80 steps) then you have the choice to walk down the stairs again or go on the slide, I chose the slide so carried a mat up 80 odd stairs and when I came out of the aircraft someone had stolen my mat so I couldn’t use the slide, I was very upset but wasn’t going to climb up all those stairs again. A few of the girls did use the slide and said it was fun.

I would certainly recommend this museum if visiting Speyer on a River Cruise, we spent the morning here but I could have spent all day as it was so interesting. Here are a few pictures of what is there:-

Wing walking and the submarine were my highlights of the day.

We then went to a local bar by the ship to have a German beer as well needed as so hot!

We headed back to the ship for lunch and to change then walked into Speyer town for a look around the church and the shopping areas, it’s such a pretty town with lots of shops & cafes in the pedestrian zone.  The walk was around 15 minutes so not too far for a stroll and to pick up a few souvenirs.

Next time I will blog about Strasbourg which was our next stop.
