Viking Expands Global Fleet With Four Brand-New River Ships Across Europe & Egypt

Viking has announced a major expansion of its award-winning fleet, taking delivery of four brand-new purpose-built river vessels.

The additions include three new Viking Longships sailing Europe’s iconic waterways and a custom-built river ship dedicated to the Nile.

This latest fleet surge reinforces Viking's commitment to offering immersive, culturally rich travel across Europe and Egypt in signature Scandinavian comfort.

New Longships on the Rhine, Main, and Danube: Viking Annar & Viking Dagur

Built at Meyer’s Neptun Werft shipyard in Rostock-Warnemünde, Germany, both the Viking Annar and Viking Dagur are designed specifically to navigate the waterways of Central Europe.

Each vessel accommodates up to 190 guests across 95 staterooms, offering refined Scandinavian aesthetic touches and spacious public areas.

The Viking Annar sails a selection of Viking’s most popular European routes, including the Rhine Getaway, Grand European Tour, Passage to Eastern Europe, European Sojourn, and festive Christmas on the Rhine voyages.

Meanwhile, sister ship Viking Dagur joins the fleet to operate high-demand itineraries including Rhine Getaway, Paris to the Swiss Alps, Christmas on the Rhine, and Christmas on the Rhine & Moselle.

Seine River Cruising in the Heart of Paris: Viking Fjolvar

Also constructed at Neptun Werft, the Viking Fjolvar has been custom-built to navigate the Seine River in France.

Hosting 168 guests across 84 staterooms, the vessel is specifically sized to dock at Viking’s exclusive mooring location in central Paris, placing guests within walking distance of the Eiffel Tower.

The Viking Fjolvar operates roundtrip itineraries from Paris, including the popular Paris & the Heart of Normandy sailing as well as the new Christmastime in Paris & Normandy voyage.

Luxury on the Nile: Viking Ptah

Further afield in North Africa, Viking has officially taken delivery of the Viking Ptah following a delivery ceremony at Massara shipyard in Cairo.

Built specifically to navigate the Nile River, this state-of-the-art vessel accommodates just 82 guests in 41 staterooms.

The Viking Ptah joins her sister ships in Egypt to operate Viking’s popular 12-day Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary.

The vessel features an intimate layout designed to match the elegance of Viking's ocean and river fleet, providing panoramic views of ancient temples and riverbanks.

Signature Viking Design and Innovations

All four new vessels incorporate Viking's signature Scandinavian interior design, marked by clean lines, natural wood accents, and light-filled spaces.

Key technical and architectural highlights include Viking's patented square bow, which allows the ships to feature three full decks without compromising aerodynamic or hydrodynamic efficiency.

Guests onboard will also enjoy the indoor/outdoor Aquavit Terrace for al fresco dining, as well as an asymmetric corridor layout that enables Viking to offer true two-room suites with private verandas and French balconies.

Looking Ahead: Viking's Orderbook and Growth Plans

The delivery of these four ships forms part of Viking's long-term expansion strategy. Based on its current orderbook, Viking expects to take delivery of 20 additional river ships by 2028, expanding its river fleet to 114 vessels.

Alongside river growth, Viking is set to expand its ocean and expedition fleet, expecting nine additional ocean ships and two additional expedition ships by 2031.

This will bring Viking's total ocean and expedition fleet to 26 vessels, cementing its position as a global leader in destination-focused travel.
