Modern Dutch Elegance

Created in collaboration with acclaimed London-based design studio SMC, Bar 1873 anchors Oosterdam's central atrium on Deck 2.

The immediate showstopper is a dramatic, three-metre-tall illuminated tulip sculpture. Inspired by Holland's national bloom and Holland America Line's signature orange tulip, this glowing masterpiece rises through the atrium, visible from multiple decks and bathing the venue in a warm, welcoming radiance.

Surrounding the sculpture is a treasure trove of maritime heritage:

  • Over 200 Curated Artefacts: Guests can explore bespoke artwork, repurposed nautical objects, and an illustrated timeline celebrating a century and a half of exploration.

  • Tributes to Classic Liners: The lounge's striking centrepiece rug draws direct inspiration from the classic dining room clock aboard the historic SS Rotterdam, with carpets mimicking the play of light across ocean swells.

  • Warmth of Hotel New York: A grand central fireplace echoes the architecture of the line's historic original headquarters in Rotterdam, infusing the modern space with classic Old World hospitality.

Storytelling Through the Glass

Holland America Line has long been celebrated for mixology that tells a story, and Bar 1873 takes that art form to brand-new heights.

On Oosterdam, the bar's overarching theme—May She Be Blessed—pays homage to royal godmothers and the time-honoured naval tradition of ship christenings.

The design specifically honours the 1958 christening of Rotterdam V by Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, celebrating the cruise line's enduring bond with the Dutch royal family.

The drinks menu reflects this royal fanfare, headlined by the signature May She Be Blessed cocktail. Named after the traditional blessing bestowed upon a vessel before she touches the water, guests can personalise the drink with their own curated essence, turning every order into an interactive, bespoke toast. Alongside this showpiece, guests can sip modern twists on vintage classics, premium Dutch spirits, and fine wines.

To elevate the atmosphere, live piano performances will take centre stage every evening, joined by guest vocalists and Holland America Line’s classical Vivace musicians for an effortlessly sophisticated soundtrack.

A Reimagined Crow's Nest

The enhancements aboard Oosterdam do not stop at the atrium. High above the bow, the ship's beloved Crow's Nest observation lounge is receiving a major transformation of its own.

Celebrated for its floor-to-ceiling panoramic ocean views, the Crow's Nest will offer enhanced flexibility from sunrise to late evening.

By day, it remains an idyllic scenic retreat for daytime enrichment talks, board games, and quiet contemplation of the horizon.

As night falls, the energy shifts into high gear. An expanded live music programme will feature energetic bands performing favourite crowd-pleasing anthems from the 1970s right through to modern chart-toppers.

With a spacious dance floor and dynamic new lighting, it promises to be one of the most vibrant nightspots at sea.

The Holland America Evolution

Bar 1873 and the refreshed Crow's Nest mark the opening chapter of the Holland America Evolution programme: the largest single fleet investment in the company's 153-year history.

The ambitious initiative will revitalise all six Vista Class and Signature Class vessels, beginning with Oosterdam and Zuiderdam before extending across the fleet, including the newly acquired Arcadia from P&O Cruises.

Drawing inspiration from the line's flagship Pinnacle Class, the upgrades will refresh staterooms, expand entertainment, and introduce elevated dining spaces while retaining the gracious service and mid-sized ship intimacy that guests cherish.

Best of all, Bar 1873 will not be a one-size-fits-all concept. As the venue rolls out across future ships, each bar will tell a completely different chapter of maritime history, giving cruisers an exciting new experience to discover across every ship in the fleet.
