It was only when I was tucking into a bowl of Asian-inspired fresh mussels in the Grand Dining Room on Oceania Nautica recently that I realised how food can create some of our fondest travel memories.

When the maître d’ came over to ask how the meal was, I had to be completely honest: "These are the best fresh mussels I have ever tasted."

That is quite the compliment because, as a fairly well-travelled person, I have tried many mussel dishes in my time, usually mopped up with crusty bread and washed down with an ice-cold glass of Sauvignon Blanc.

But this dish was out of this world. Fresh local mussels in coconut and lemongrass... I can still remember exactly how they tasted right now.

How Flavours Transport Us Back in Time

While discussing the meal, my table companions and I started sharing our favourite ever dishes. I remembered right there where I was and which ship I was on when I tasted the absolute best French onion soup I’ve ever had. In fact, it was so good I ordered two bowls of it!

Oceania Cruises changes its menu every day, so I didn't see the mussels again during my week on board, but I would pay good money to try that starter all over again. It was sublime.

Just like hearing a song can instantly transport you back to a specific place and the person you were with when you were younger, I think food does the exact same thing.

If we really think about it, we can all remember our favourite dishes, where we were, and who we were with, even many years later.

Food really can take you back to a place that puts a smile on your face and makes you think, "I would do anything to try that again." For me, that means sailing back aboard Oceania Nautica, which I would do in a heartbeat.

Oceania Cruises prides itself on serving the finest cuisine at sea, and those mussels on the first night in the stunning Grand Dining Room were a true testament to that commitment. They definitely set the bar for what became a week filled with exciting new dishes to try.

From the pancetta-wrapped fillet of veal with Oscar-style lobster tail in Polo Grill to the signature Italian trio featuring tagliolini carbonara, lobster risotto, and pesto gnocchi, you never know where or when you are going to taste that one meal that stays with you forever.

Years from now, I might forget what I did every single day of that cruise, but I suspect I'll still remember sitting in the Grand Dining Room on my first evening and tasting those mussels.

Why is it that we can remember a meal from a holiday years ago, yet can’t remember what we ate last Tuesday? Perhaps it isn't just the food after all.

Maybe it’s the people we share it with, the laughs we have, the outstanding service we experience, and the way the entire dining experience captures our hearts.
