Cruise.co.uk's Social Media Executive, Nicole Parkes, recently had the pleasure of spending six nights onboard Silver Dawn, sailing on a Canary Islands itinerary, from Santa Cruz de Tenerife to Lisbon, Portugal.

The S.A.L.T Experiences 

The revolutionary S.A.L.T. (Sea and Land Taste) programme on Silver Dawn transforms your voyage into an immersive culinary journey, connecting you deeply with the places you visit through food and drink.

This is much more than just a destination-inspired menu; it's a holistic experience that includes the S.A.L.T. Kitchen, a restaurant with an ever-changing, regionally-focused menu, and the S.A.L.T. Lab for hands-on cooking classes.

The programme also extends ashore with S.A.L.T. Experiences, curated shore excursions that take you to local farms, markets, and kitchens, allowing you to taste the culture and heritage of the port with the guidance of regional experts.

My favourite of these experiences was the S.A.L.T bar, a speakeasy-style bar with a variety of exciting cocktails, including speciality ones inspired by your cruise and destinations.

Unfortunately, during my cruise, the S.A.L.T excursion we had booked was cancelled due to incoming bad weather, which led us to leave Cadiz a day early. However, instead, we had an immersive experience while at a Spanish bar during our port stop in Cadiz.

The OTIUM Spa

Silver Dawn is home to the OTIUM wellness program, which redefines the cruise spa experience by focusing on pure, balanced indulgence, inspired by the leisure traditions of ancient Rome.

As I’m renowned for loving a spa, one of my favourite places onboard Silver Dawn was, of course, the OTIUM spa!

OTIUM is all about pleasure, pampering, and instant gratification. The beautiful, Roman-themed spa features a curated menu of treatments, a large sauna and steam room, and a large relaxation room.

This room is free to use, and includes a sauna, steam room, plush loungers, a large ice tub of champagne, and signature canapés to enjoy whilst socialising with other guests.

The OTIUM philosophy extends all the way to your suite, where butlers can draw a bespoke, aromatherapy-infused bath with ambient lighting, luxury bath salts, and treats.

The Silent Disco

Who knew a silent disco would get the whole ship dancing?!

For a truly unique and lively evening, Silver Dawn hosts immersive Silent Disco nights.

Guests are given individual wireless headphones with multiple music channels to choose from, allowing them to instantly switch between different genres of music played by the onboard DJ.

The Suite Life

Every accommodation on Silver Dawn is an elegantly appointed, ocean-view suite, ensuring a luxurious sense of space and comfort.

The ultra-luxury experience begins with your dedicated butler, who attends to every detail, from stocking your preferred drinks in the complimentary minibar to arranging an in-suite Otium bath experience. 

I really liked the small details included in the suites onboard Silver Dawn: 

• Your butler fills up your water bottle daily

• You can order different pillows to suit your needs- I opted for a feather down pillow, which was bliss!

• Sometimes, the butler would leave a little note and some chocolates at the end of the night for me to enjoy after partying the night away with other guests, which was lovely.

The marble bathroom in the suite was stunning and so spacious. The full bath was also a great size for a tall girl like me! Having a small walk-in wardrobe with loads of storage was also such a treat on a cruise!

The Silversea Chronicles Newspaper

The Silversea Chronicles is your essential daily newsletter, delivered to your suite each evening, serving as your comprehensive guide to the following day's activities.

Instead of using an app, like on some high-tech cruiselines, Silversea creates a daily printed newspaper delivered to your suite featuring all you need to know about the following day.

This includes everything from the ship's arrival and departure times and important port information to the complete schedule of onboard events, including enrichment lectures, dining hours, show times in the Venetian Lounge, and the dress code for the evening.

I really liked the idea of receiving a daily newspaper during a cruise! I thought it was a nice touch and something reliable to look forward to each day.

The Crew 

The hallmark of the Silversea experience is the commitment to personalised service, made possible by the attentive and discreet crew, who often outnumber the guests. 

From the moment you step onboard, you will experience the warmth of their hospitality, most notably through the service of your dedicated butler, available in every suite. 

With an industry-leading staff-to-guest ratio, the entire team is expertly trained to anticipate your needs, ensuring a seamless, memorable, and ultra-luxury journey defined by genuine care and attention; it’s always a bonus when you walk up to the bar and the crew already know what drink you’d like!

Everyone was so warm and friendly and would go above and beyond to make sure you’re happy. It was also lovely how the crew remembered your name as you walked around and were happy to stop and ask about your day.

As a solo passenger, you would never feel lonely onboard a Silversea cruise.

The Food

Dining on Silver Dawn is an open-seating, all-inclusive affair with a world-class collection of nine distinct restaurants and lounges offering unparalleled culinary diversity.

Guests can enjoy French fine dining at La Dame, authentic regional Italian cuisine at La Terrazza, and Japanese culinary artistry at Kaiseki.

The ship also features the innovative, regionally-focused menus of the S.A.L.T. Kitchen, casual dining at the Grill and the convivial atmosphere of the Spaccanapoli pizzeria.

My highlight of all the dining venues available onboard was The Grill; imagine cutting your steak with a butter knife! The whole experience here was unreal. It was also a really fun experience being able to use the hot stones to cook our steak how we liked them.

Each night, a sommelier would also visit, recommending different bottles of wine to suit the meals we had! If you particularly enjoyed a specific wine, the crew would make a note and visit you at dinner to ask if you’d like to drink that wine, or if you wanted to try something new.

Another great restaurant was Atlantide, which you can visit for breakfast, lunch and dinner. This dining venue can get busy sometimes, as it is a popular destination for dinner, so it’s worth booking in advance!

The Onboard Atmosphere 

With a capacity for just 596 guests, Silver Dawn maintains an intimate, social atmosphere that feels more like a chic, five-star boutique hotel than a traditional cruise ship.

Thanks to a high crew-to-guest ratio, the service is seamless, allowing guests to relax and enjoy the elegant public spaces like the Dolce Vita lounge or the quiet Observation Library.

The overall vibe onboard is refined, unhurried, and genuinely enjoyable, appealing to well-travelled guests seeking a personalised, high-end experience.

For me, the atmosphere on Silve Dawn always felt calm, effortless, friendly and fun. Not once did I feel overwhelmed on this ship, even at its full capacity!

The Daily Quiz & Bingo

Evenings are lively, but the daytime on Silver Dawn offers a variety of engaging, included activities, prominently featuring the daily quiz or trivia sessions. These events, usually held in the late afternoon, are a popular and often competitive social ritual where guests form teams to test their knowledge on a broad range of topics. 

While the ship focuses on enrichment and refined leisure, other lighthearted, classic activities like bingo, golf putting challenges, and table tennis tournaments are also scheduled, ensuring there’s always an option for fun beyond the pool deck or library.

It was a real highlight of mine to see all of the passengers onboard taking part in the quizzes and getting very competitive; it was great to mingle with lots of other people, especially for solo passengers. Even the bar staff were getting involved in the fun!

Passengers 

The guests onboard Silver Dawn are typically affluent, well-travelled individuals who prioritise discovery, fine dining, and personalised service in an intimate setting.

Whilst exploring the ship, I met some lovely passengers, including a woman who was on her first-ever cruise and who was also travelling solo.

I also got chatting to another couple who only cruise with Silversea and had completed over 600 nights with them so far!

The Art Work

Silver Dawn showcases an extensive and thoughtfully curated collection of contemporary art, transforming the ship into a floating gallery for guests to enjoy. 

The collection features pieces selected for their elegance and ability to complement the ship’s sophisticated design, spanning various types, from sculptures and paintings to installations.

Dotted around the ship are small alcoves featuring artwork from around the world and large paintings that were also available for passengers to buy. It often felt like you were walking around a floating art gallery or museum; it was lovely to explore this all during a sea day.
