Glass chandeliers, dark teak, plush carpets, and a chilled glass of prosecco the second I walked through the door: my first impressions on board Oceania Nautica were undeniably impressive.

Having sailed on over 50 cruises across mainstream lines and five-star luxury ships, what I had not yet experienced was what Oceania Cruises describes as "premium luxury", the sweet spot bridging the gap between the two.

Mainstream mega-ships and six-star ultra-luxury lines are easy to understand, but Oceania positions itself right in the middle.

I spent a week on board to find out what you actually get for the extra money, whether I noticed the difference, and ultimately, whether I would pay for it again.

Redefining Value: It Is All in the Detail

Staying in a Concierge Level Verandah stateroom on Deck 6, my attention was immediately captured by the exceptional crew.

When asking whether small-ship luxury is worth the money, we also have to ask: what does value for money actually mean to you?

Paying for luxury is rarely just about the monetary value of an item. It is about making things effortless, feeling genuinely valued, and being looked after.

It is the attention to detail that stands out most: the chocolate on your pillow each evening, fresh Vero water replenished daily, and complimentary 24-hour room service delivering a hot breakfast straight to your door.

Lying in bed with your Daily Currents schedule and simply picking up the phone to order a hot cup of tea, cookies, or a slice of late-night pizza is wonderful.

Mainstream lines might offer in-cabin kettles, but they do not come with hot chocolate and fresh cookies brought directly to your door by a smiling crew member.

Included Luxuries vs Mainstream Add-Ons

There is also the substantial amount included directly in your upfront cruise fare. Starlink Wi-Fi, gratuities, main dining, buffet meals, speciality restaurants, 24-hour room service, and reusable Vero water bottles are all covered. On mainstream cruise lines, these extras carry additional charges that quickly add up.

When comparing a mainstream cruise fare to a small-ship luxury voyage, looking only at the initial ticket price does not tell the full story.

When sailing on mainstream lines, travellers often purchase drinks packages, dining upgrades, and Wi-Fi in advance to avoid a large bill at the end of the trip.

Once you tally up all those add-ons, the final cost gets remarkably close to what you would have paid for a premium luxury cruise in the first place.

More than the maths, however, is the feeling on board when you know so much is already taken care of. Walking off the ship at the end of your trip without signing off a long list of extra charges is a lovely feeling.

A Price Tag vs A Feeling

Consider how we evaluate purchases in everyday life. People willingly pay more for a high-end coffee machine or a top-of-the-range kitchen appliance because they want faster performance, higher capacity, or a richer result.

A basic version technically does the same underlying job, but the person buying premium has decided those built-in upgrades are worth the higher price tag.

So, is small-ship luxury really worth the money? The answer is not as simple as comparing one cruise fare with another.

It lies in the seamless moments, the personal crew touches, and the unhurried relaxation that comes when everything is handled for you.
