Specialist Cruise Consultant Darren’s Firsthand Report

I was lucky enough to be invited aboard Oceania's newest operational vessel, the Allura, sailing from 20th July to 28th July 2026.

Allura accommodates 1,200 guests at double occupancy with 800 crew members, providing an impressive 1.5 to 1 guest-to-crew ratio in the upper premium/luxury segment.

I ended up writing this very much like a daily blog to give a genuine feel of day-to-day life on board and what clients can expect with the arrangements around the cruise when we package travel. Grab a coffee and imagine you are there!

Pre-Departure Planning & Flights

Oceania Pre-Departure: Once booked, complete the passenger information form. Online check-in opens 21 days (three weeks) prior to departure.

You will need your passport details, a credit card for your onboard account, a photo upload, and you must watch the mandatory safety video, which simplifies the muster process once on board.

UK Guest Tip: Online check-in may indicate that luggage labels will be posted before departure. For UK guests, labels are not sent in advance; your bags are tagged directly at the port terminal.

Flight to Istanbul (Turkish Airlines): Online check-in opens 48 hours prior to departure via the Turkish Airlines app or website. Seats are automatically allocated at check-in; note that if clients wish to change an auto-assigned seat, they will be charged the standard seat-selection fee. It is best to advise clients with specific seating preferences to pre-book in advance.

Check-in and bag drop at London Heathrow Terminal 2 was straightforward, taking roughly 15 minutes to clear security. The flight (TK1980) felt more like a long-haul journey, complete with seatback entertainment and a full meal service including complimentary beer and wine. Upon arrival at Istanbul Airport (IST), expect a 15 to 20 minute walk to passport control, though queues moved quickly and bags were already waiting at the carousel.

Pre-Cruise Stay in Istanbul

Airport Transfer: We used Transferz for our airport-to-hotel ride. The day before arrival, the local provider sent a WhatsApp message with clear step-by-step instructions and a video guide to find the pickup area.

Note that passenger names must be registered three hours prior for local authority compliance, so ensure all guest names are added to your transfer booking notes. The scenic drive into the city took about an hour.

DoubleTree by Hilton Istanbul - Sirkeci: This hotel makes an exceptional base in the prime Old Town (Sultanahmet) district, within a 15-minute walk of the Grand Bazaar, Hagia Sophia, and the Basilica Cistern.

Check-in was swift, accompanied by the iconic warm chocolate chip cookie. Our room was well-sized with generous storage and a large rain shower.

Breakfast offered a wide spread of local specialities, fresh pastries, and made-to-order omelettes. I would highly recommend adding this to your preferred pre-cruise hotel list.

Dining Tip: For an unforgettable evening in Istanbul, visit Roof Mezze 360 for panoramic views over the river, attentive service, and great value.

Embarkation & First Impressions

We took a morning stroll through the Grand Bazaar before our 15-minute transfer to the Galataport Cruise Terminal, Istanbul's state-of-the-art underground cruise facility.

Check-in opened smoothly, though many guests arrived at once regardless of their assigned arrival slots. Desks were split by accommodation grade, and upon checking our documents, the agents handed us our leather key card holders with cabin cards and landing cards. From arriving at the port to walking up the ship's gangway took approximately one hour.

Stepping into the Deck 5 atrium, the warm welcome from the crew was immediate. Within seconds, we were handed a glass of sparkling wine and guided toward our muster station.

The atrium serves as the central hub of the ship, with reception, concierge, and shore excursions surrounding a dramatic cylindrical central light sculpture framed by a sweeping spiral staircase.

My first impression of Allura was that she feels warm, premium, and boutique without feeling stuffy, with an outstanding sense of personal space per guest.

Concierge Level Veranda Stateroom (Cabin 10117)

Our stateroom was ready just after lunch. The room attendant introduced themselves promptly and explained the perks included with Concierge Level accommodation:

  • Priority check-in and luggage delivery

  • Early booking windows for speciality dining

  • Complimentary laundry service (up to three bags)

  • Welcome bottle of Prosecco and embarkation-day garment pressing

  • Unlimited access to the Aquamar Spa Terrace

  • Expanded room service breakfast and dinner menus

  • Dedicated access to the private Concierge Lounge

The stateroom is very well-sized, complete with a comfortable sofa, vanity desk, and a spacious veranda. Storage includes a large wardrobe and cupboards; drawers are on the shallower side, so unpacking fully is recommended.

A drinks nook features Oceania's complimentary Vero water (replenished daily), refillable metal bottles for shore days, and an included soft-drink minibar.

The bathroom was the largest I have seen outside of ultra-luxury ships, boasting a large marble vanity, excellent lighting, and a massive walk-in shower with a rain showerhead, stocked with Oceania's signature Aquamar toiletries.

Culinary Discoveries Across the Ship

Waves Grill: On embarkation day, while most guests headed to the Terrace Cafe buffet, we opted for Waves Grill on the pool deck.

This casual alfresco venue serves elevated grilled specialities, including a sensational Surf & Turf Wagyu burger topped with lobster tail. It also serves a fantastic cooked-to-order breakfast in the mornings.

The Grand Dining Room: Featuring grand alcoves, crystal chandeliers, and expansive aft wake views, the main restaurant is breathtaking. Menus change daily alongside timeless staples like steak, roast chicken, and salmon.

Service was attentive yet unobtrusive, with dedicated sommeliers visiting every table to guide your wine choices. Plant-based and healthy options are clearly highlighted course by course.

Terrace Cafe: The buffet avoids standard cruise-cafeteria clichés. On top of pasta, salad, and carving stations, it features rotating dishes from the Grand Dining Room (such as escargot vol-au-vents and slow-cooked Asian pork belly) and an incredible daily selection of miniature patisseries.

On select evenings, the chefs host a destination-themed Market Night; our Greek feast featured fresh souvlaki, local cheeses, and regional breads. Note that the buffet closes earlier than on some lines, wrapping up at 21:00.

The Creperie: Debuting aboard Allura, this charming spot sits right beside the coffee lounge. The aroma of warm waffles, fresh crepes, and artisanal gelato fills the air. The chocolate feast bubble waffle wrap is a must-try indulgent afternoon treat!

Aquamar Kitchen: Serving breakfast and lunch, this wellness-focused venue offers a refreshing break from heavier cruise fare. The menu includes avocado toast variations, plant-based power bowls, falafel wraps, and energising smoothies.

Polo Grill: Oceania’s classic steakhouse sits aft with sweeping ocean views. It exudes old-world charm, complete with tableside Caesar salad preparation and a melt-in-the-mouth Surf & Turf fillet.

Drinks Package Note: The included House Select package covers wines, beers, and champagne during lunch and dinner hours. Upgrading to the Prestige package (roughly $39 per day) covers drinks at any hour, which is well worth it if you enjoy poolside cocktails or post-dinner drinks in the lounges.

Life On Board & Entertainment

The guest demographic on our sailing was refreshingly younger than anticipated, averaging between 30 and 50, with guests staying out noticeably later.

The forward-facing Horizons Lounge serves as a bright observation lounge by day and turns into a lively club venue at night, featuring a superb resident live band, evening happy hours (offering 2-for-1 cocktails), and a popular karaoke night.

article image

A headline highlight of the voyage was the Blue Horizons Party, where guests dressed in blue for an evening of live music performances and themed cocktails. In the Allura Lounge, the production cast staged high-calibre cultural dance showcases and comedy nights.

For relaxation, the Aquamar Spa Sundeck at the bow is a quiet retreat for Concierge and Suite guests, equipped with heated ceramic loungers, plush sunbeds, a thalassotherapy jet pool, and adjacent sauna and steam rooms. The ship also features a Players Club casino with a wide selection of tables and slot machines.

Port Days & Itinerary Highlights

  • Bozcaada & Troy, Turkey: A tender port where we joined a fascinating shore excursion across to the Turkish mainland to tour the archaeological ruins and museum of Troy. Oceania provides all guests with lightweight digital audio guides in their cabins, ensuring you hear every detail from the expert local guides.

  • Weather Diversions (Lesbos, Chios & Kos): High winds prevented tender operations in Mitilini and our scheduled stops at Chios and Kos. The bridge and cruise director handled this with great professionalism, seamlessly swapping in a surprise sea day alongside rescheduled calls to Nafplio and Chania (Crete).

article image
  • Izmir, Turkey: Docking directly at Alsancak port, the city centre is a pleasant 30-minute walk via a newly built seaside promenade leading straight into the vibrant historic bazaar and Roman Agora.

  • Nafplio, Greece: A stunning surprise port. Tendering into town reveals grand marble squares, upscale boutiques, seaside cafes serving iced freddo cappuccinos, and a coastal path winding beneath Venetian fortresses.

  • Chania (Souda Bay), Crete: Oceania provided complimentary shuttle coaches into Chania town, where we explored the Venetian harbour, historic lighthouse, and winding lanes.

article image
  • Santorini, Greece: Tendering into the Old Port was efficient, but a localised rockslide closed the walking steps, leaving thousands of guests from four liners queuing for the cable car. Despite the delays ashore, Allura held departure until every single passenger was safely back aboard.

Tip: Booking an official ship excursion in Santorini bypasses the town cable car queues, as coaches pick guests up directly from Athinios ferry port.

Disembarkation & Journey Home

We docked on schedule at Piraeus (Athens). Due to increased EU border checks, immigration queues at the cruise terminal caused minor delays, making it crucial to build a sensible buffer into your post-cruise flight times.

Our pre-booked transfer with Transferz collected us directly outside the terminal in a spacious Tesla, navigating highway delays to reach Athens Airport in plenty of time.

The journey home with Aegean Airlines (A3602 to Heathrow) was smooth, featuring quick self-service bag drops and a hot Greek meal service included on board.

Final Thoughts

Oceania’s newest vessel thoroughly lives up to expectations, retaining the attentive, friendly service of the line's smaller ships while introducing a fresher, boutique aesthetic.

The staterooms are exceptionally generous, and upgrading to Concierge Level is well worth the modest price difference for the spa access, priority booking, and laundry perks alone.

Above all, dining remains the beating heart of the Oceania experience, with venues like Aquamar Kitchen, the Creperie, and Polo Grill delivering some of the finest meals you will encounter at sea.
