1) Queen Mary 2 is Not Actually a Cruise Ship

Her sisters, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria, are Cunard cruise ships designed to look like old-style ocean liners, but Queen Mary 2 is in fact the only ocean liner left in the world! Ocean liners are actually specifically built for fast yet comfortable transatlantic voyages between Southampton and New York. 

For her guests, the experience is all about the voyage itself, hence why there are no port calls! Instead, the emphasis is on the incredible onboard experience and arriving at the best port of all, the Big Apple.

2) She's Big

At 148,528 tonnes, Queen Mary 2 was the largest cruise ship ever built at the time of her maiden voyage in 2004. Now eclipsed by an array of ever-evolving mega ships, including Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, Queen Mary 2 still feels astonishingly large when you first see her. 

But despite her bulk, she sure can move fast! Her maximum speed of 29 knots (33 mph) compared to the cruise ship norm of 24 (27.5 mph).

3) And Long...

When Cunard’s first ship, Britannia, made her maiden voyage back in 1840, her size caused a stir. But, at 1,130 feet compared to Britannia’s quaint 230 feet, Queen Mary 2 makes her ancient relative look relatively small! 

If you need a little help in imagining the size of Queen Mary 2 - her length is equivalent to four football pitches (great for working off all those afternoon teas as you pace the decks), or 147 feet longer than the Eiffel Tower is tall (984 feet)!

Additionally, Queen Mary 2 boasts 17 decks and looms large 200 feet above the waterline. That’s equivalent to a 23-story building (and she only stopped there as she has to get under the Verazzano Narrows Bridge in New York!)!

4) You Can Walk on Her For Miles

Queen Mary 2’s 360-degree promenade deck, found on deck 7 of Queen Mary 2’s deck plan, is a faithful recreation of bygone eras where ladies and gentlemen ‘stepped out’ for a stroll to get a bit of sea air, pass the time of day and check each other out from behind those handy old-fashioned hats and parasols!

The promenade deck, whose circumference spans more than a third of a mile, is well stocked with traditional steamer chairs, great for a short rest while doing a daily power walk on a sea day! On windier days, there are interior promenades circling several decks so you can take your daily stroll without the weather messing with the glamorous blow-dry you’ve just had done for a black-tie dinner!

5) Swim Rain or Shine!

There’s no chance of being caught in a shower at sea thanks to Queen Mary 2’s state-of-the-art retractable glass roof, which means you can swim in the Pavilion Pool on deck 12 come rain or shine! But if you’d rather take a dip inside (perhaps before a relaxing massage or facial), you can do so in the indoor thermal pool in the spa.

6) The Largest Planetarium at Sea

Onboard Queen Mary 2, you can see the stars on deck and inside Illuminations, the largest planetarium of its kind found anywhere on the ocean! This impressive domed 150-seated venue transforms into a full-scale planetarium where guests can journey through space without ever leaving their seats.

7) You Can Hear Her for Miles!

When a Queen speaks, everyone listens, and this is especially true when it comes to this floating monarch - when her whistle blows, it can be heard for 10 miles! The sound of Queen Mary 2’s whistle is a nostalgic echo down the years as it’s the original whistle from Cunard’s Queen Mary, which ruled the waves between 1936 and 1946.

8) The Largest Library at Sea

Bookworms will be hard-pressed to find themselves bored on a Queen Mary 2 cruise! The ship is home to one of the biggest library at sea, found on deck 8 of Queen Mary 2’s deck plan. This elegant, wood-panelled sanctuary houses over 8,000 hardback books, ranging from classic literature and travel guides to bestsellers and biographies. 

With plush leather chairs, panoramic ocean views, and a peaceful hush, it’s the perfect spot to unwind with a good read as the waves roll by. If there were a bestseller’s list for libraries at sea, this one would consistently take the number one spot!

Culture buffs can get their fix of high-brow theatre at sea, thanks to Queen Mary 2!
