Operators sick of the fake claims…..

We’ve all been there , having the time of our lives on our Jollies. Eating and drinking whatever we want , sunbathing in the baking hot temperatures and sampling local dishes.

Occasionally this can lead to the most awful and unpleasant cases of sickness which sees your dream holiday turning into a nightmare !!

I went to Egypt and went armed with all my tablets , potions and hand sanitisers to keep all bugs at bay. I preached to my children about cleaning their hands and not having any ice in drinks etc and they were absolutely fine but guess who ended up in bed for two days !!

If you’ve ever been a victim of the travel trots or noro virus on a cruise then you know it really is awful and can knock you off your feet . Unfortunately out there , there are the odd rogues who try and make some money out of holiday illnesses and even go as far as completely fabricating them and try and claim when they get home.

This was the case for one Tui client who decided to give it a go when he returned from his Cape Verde holiday after staying at an All Inclusive holiday.

The 40-year-old did not report any issues or illness at the time. Tui said the first knowledge that it or the hotel had the alleged sickness was receipt of the Letter of Claim around six months after the client returned home. He claimed there was a poor standard of hygiene at the hotel and that food was not properly cooked. His claim was supported by medical evidence from a Doctor Lieberman and a claim by his father.

Tui looked at the clients Facebook page and found posts during the course of the holiday which showed him eating, drinking and socialising. This evidence was used by Tui in court.

After studying images and comments made ,  it was very clear to them that these were not pictures of a man who had had his holiday ruined , in fact far from it.

The problem is claims like this can cost the big operators hundreds of thousands and have a knock on effect to the industry in general. The fake sickness claims are not something the industry are willing to take lying down and as a massive message to make a stand ,  this particular client was fined a whopping £19,025.

This will put a clear message ,  that its not acceptable to try and get away with things like fake claims and if you’ve ever contemplated giving it a try,  then just dont !!.

Plastering it all over social media that your having the best holiday ever isn’t the best way to go either !!
