My Indoor Sky Diving Experience….

Have you ever tried Sky-diving, it’s always been on my list of things to do as I’m sure it is for many people but actually doing it is another thing. As the years have gone by I have become more and more scared of heights and it’s something I’m not sure I could do now! Last week I got the closest I think I may ever come to sky diving and that was to try Indoor sky diving.

I have to be honest when I say when my husband bought us the vouchers as a surprise I wasn’t overly keen, he had been at Christmas time as part of a works day out and he loved it. He couldn’t wait for me and my little girl Sofia to have a go….Sofia as you can probably imagine was very excited. With a little gentle persuasion I decided I was going to have a go and face my fears.

We arrived quite early so had time to go and see the wind tunnel and sit and watch an earlier class. This is where the panic really kicked in, the sheer height of the tunnel, the sound of the wind, all had me feeling nervous to say the least. Sofia didn’t seemed fazed at all in fact she just couldn’t wait to get started. I had to pretend to Sofia that mummy wasn’t nervous at all…I didn’t want to give her any doubts.

First on the agenda was the safety briefing. This was a short video followed by the instructor Steve giving us a talk on what to do and what not to do. Lots of instructions the main one being to relax and not tense up your body, the more tense the more difficult!

We got ourselves suited up in the full body suits provided, add to this ear plugs, goggles and a helmet and we were ready to go.

Each flight was around two minutes long, and although it doesn’t sound like a long time inside that wind tunnel I promise it felt like it. I watched Sofia as she went first and she did so well, she looked like a little natural in there. Next it was my turn, heart beating I leaned forward into the tunnel and off I went. It really was harder than it looked, you had to keep your body as relaxed and you could, try and get into the flying position with your head up looking straight ahead and no sudden movements. All sounds easy until you are in that wind tunnel! But what an experience…amazing like nothing else I have ever tried.

The “High Fly” experience was an extra you could choose on the day, this is where the instructor holds onto you and flies you up to the top of the wind tunnel twice. I wasn’t sure of Sofia was going to want to do this part of it but she did! She is certainly a little dare devil! I had to follow and this for me was the scariest but most exhilarating part of the whole experience and I was so glad I did it, although never again!

At the end of the two flights each session everyone was awarded a flying certificate to take home. Sofia was awarded her “white wings” these were giving as she had passed the first assessment and had been able to maintain a comfortable flying position without moving all over the tunnel , out of the whole group she was the only one so she did really well. It’s definately not as easy as it looks and I think I was too tense which didn’t help me. Relaxing when you’re so nervous is not easy!

We enjoyed it so much we bought my daughter a return flight package and my nephew a starter flight package for his birthday. We can’t wait to go again, I’m going to sit this one out!

So all in all as an experience I can highly recommend it and I’m so glad I did it. Have you been indoor sky diving?

Did you know you can experience all this on board Anthem of the Seas and other Quantum Class Royal Caribbean ships…how fantastic to do this at sea!

thanks as always for reading, until next time Abbi x
