Well done Costa Cruises

Costa Cruises have announced a new project, which began last week in Italy aimed at fighting childhood hunger, the article really caught my eye so i thought i’d share the details with you this week in my blog….

They have partnered up with an organization called Fondazione Banco Alimentare Onlus which are members of the European Federation of food banks, they are going to provide surplus prepared food from their cruise ship to the organization that provides food assistance to children and others.

The Costa Diadema sails one-week cruises in the Mediterranean and docks in Savona on a Saturday so the day before on the Friday any dishes that have been prepared in any of the restaurants but not served to guests will be sealed in aluminium containers and stored in refrigerators on board ready for the next day when the ship docks in Savona. The meals will then be taken to a town nearby to the Fondaziona L’Ancora which runs a home for 20 children, provides food aid for lots on people in need including refugees.

They are hoping to extend it to other ports in the Mediterranean in the future and maybe other cruise lines may follow suit.

I personally think it is a fantastic idea and can’t believe something like this has not been done before. When you think of all the food that would otherwise just go to waste (which must be a lot) will now be potentially helping save someones life. I do hope this continues and other cruise lines will follow on from Costa.

What your thoughts on this, do you think it’s the right thing to do? Do you think more could be do to help the less fortunate? Or maybe you disagree?
