Celebrity Edge is finally on its way!

cel

Some Exciting news for the Cruise industry last month came from Celebrity Cruises, they have been rather quite in the past year with the last new addition to the Celebrity Fleet being the Celebrity Reflection in 2012.

Celebrity have never been about attracting the mass market like some of the competition out there such as Royal Caribbean with the Quantum, Oasis and Icon Class or MSC with the new Seaside and Vista Class, I always think of Celebrity being quite reserved.

The Motto is ‘Modern Luxury Lives Here’ and having sailed with Celebrity I think that sums them up really well, and they do what they do so well, I can guarantee you if you spoke to a bunch of Celebrity past passengers, majority of them would say they loved the experience that Celebrity offer.

Celebrity being owned by Royal Caribbean International is great, as you have the choice, if you are a young family you can start with the big, bright and fun ships that Royal Caribbean have with the slides, rock climbing walls and bumper cars amongst many breath-taking features that they can squeeze on, not to say Celebrity aren’t good with Kids, but with Royal Caribbean focusing on this it means Celebrity can focus on the adult side of cruising and they certainly do, from amazing dining options, real grass on the top deck and Iced top bars which fantastic cocktail making shows.

One of the other really stand out points about Celebrity is that, its not about squeezing as many people on board.

Take for instance this comparison

Celebrity Eclipse which is 122,000 gross tons and she holds 2,850 passengers

Then look at,

P&O Azura which is 115,055 gross tons but she holds 3,100 passengers

However, P&O are in different brackets, so I suppose we should expect less passengers and more space, as overall Celebrity are more expensive than Celebrity.

So, the Steel has been cut for the Celebrity Edge which is the first ship in the new Edge Class of ships. She will sail in the Autumn of 2018. She will then be joined in the Spring of 2020 by the Celebrity Beyond and then 2 more un-named ships in 2012 and 2022.

Celebrity are also going slightly smaller in tonnage although saying that, materials are getting lighter and lighter so I suppose they can do more with less weight. They will be 117,000 Gross tons each and be 300 meters long with a width of 38 meters. It’s said that the new vessels will hold 2,900 guests in 1,450 rooms.

The ships will be influenced by parts of both the current popular Solstice and Millennium Class ships currently afloat for Celebrity Cruises.

For now, this is all we know about the Edge Class although keep checking back as, as soon as we know more I will let you know.
