Ajaccio

A modern commune and the capital of Corsica, Ajaccio is kissed by ocean breezes, lapped by the waters of the Mediterranean sea and caressed by the crystal cascades of the Gravona River that runs through it.

Aside from its elysian atmosphere, Ajaccio is known for being the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte. His legacy and influence are highly visible throughout Ajaccio's public spaces. Travelers will find amusement in the prevalence of statues, monuments and street names that are dedicated to the diminutive military leader. The four-story home where he was born has been converted into a remarkable museum that is one of the city's main tourist attractions. Today, it contains memorabilia from Napoleon's life and a collection of fine art from the period in which he lived.
