Take me back to the 70’s……..

Our Cruise Bulletin featured a great article recently that got me thinking how our expectations have changed over the years, and how great it would be to turn the clock back 50 years and feature some of the entertainment and accommodation on ships that we were lucky enough to have all those years ago. It would certainly make passengers appreciate how things are now a little more and put a smile on a few faces.

We asked Wilba, one of Cruise.co.uk’s Community members to share with us some of the memories of cruising over the last 57 years. I have to say some elements still represent the modern day holiday Park in the UK such as fancy dress evenings, with some passengers bringing their own favourites from home whilst other passengers who seemed to be the more frequent winners making outfits out of materials they managed to get hold of on-board, from cardboard boxes, napkins and sheets plus a lot of imagination. This is definitely something I’d love to see Cruise Lines bring back.

The First Class cabin that Wilba was lucky enough to reside in was small, basic, comprising of wooden slatted bunks and the bathroom was shared down the corridor outside. Not sure that would go down too well these days as we’ve all become so fond of our own private personal space.

One of the only similarities was that the Dining was 2 sittings with the added bonus that the Matre De would have a small selection of ties & jackets to hand out for those who had forgotten, nowadays you would just be shown the door.

I’m loving the swimming pool games entertainment with ‘diving for spoons’ and ‘the greasy pole’ surely we’d all love to see that make a comeback.

It just seems that today’s travelers, me included always want something more, something bigger, better than before. I would love to go back to living in the 70’s where people were just happy with good old fashioned fun, not grand by any scale……
