Never been to Guernsey…………

A popular port on many ex Southampton sailings is Guernsey. On our Crown Princess cruise last month the last port of call was Guernsey, it was my favourite port of all. If you’ve never been, here’s what you’re missing…………

The German military underground hospital

The largest structural reminder of the German occupation existing in the Chanel islands. Built by hundreds of slave workers, it covers an area of 75,000 square feet and took 3 ½ years to build. It was used to accommodate wounded troops brought back from France during the 2^nd World war. Exploring the underground maze is quite eerie, so if you are claustrophobic it would not be recommended. It is owned by two brothers who charge a modest £3.50 entrance fee, it’s only £10 in a taxi from the port or you can get the local bus for £2.50, bargain.

The little chapel

Built by Brother Deodat in 1914 it is said to be possibly the smallest chapel in the world. His plan was to create a miniature version of the famous grotto and basilica at Lourdes in France. The chapel is decorated with colourful broken pieces of China, shells & pebbles, people come from all over the world offering little bags of broken plates and cups, so it is truly an international landmark. You will find the chapel 5 minutes stroll down the road from the underground hospital, it is free to view, all they ask is for a small donation.

For the shopaholics, the cobbled streets are a great place to explore to pick up a bargain or two.

Guernsey candle makers, Martin Guille Gold & Silversmiths and Guernsey clockmakers, Guernsey pearl, Catherine’s best – an award winning jewellery designer.

With so much to see and do, this tiny island has so much to offer. If Guernsey features on you port of call be sure to allow as much time as possible to explore. We visited the hospital, chapel, Martin Guille Gold & Silversmiths and Guernsey clockmakers, did a little retail therapy, had a light lunch and even fitted in a local bus journey around the island. It’s a pretty little place with character around every corner.
