Concordia…Could it happen again??

I can’t believe it has been 5 year since the Costa Concordia sank. I was in Egypt at the time and my Mom texted me to say had I seen that a cruise ship had sank and did I have any passengers booked on it.

Thankfully I did not, but also I could not begin to imagine the effect this kind of disaster would have on passengers on board, but also the cruise industry as a whole.

I’m pleased to say that since she sank the cruise market as a whole did not really suffer and over the last 5 years we have just got busier and busier with the launch of new ships, and Countries being threatened by terror threats unfortunately having a negative impact on their industry, but having a very positive impact on ours.

shortly after this happening on the Concordia I happened to be cruising on the Celebrity Eclipse. Myself and a few colleagues decided to head down to the theatre where the Captain and a few crew were holding a question and answer session. To our suprise the theatre was full and everybody had the same question on their lips but who would ask it first.

The Captain was ironically Italian.

A very brave lady raised her hand and asked…..

‘In this day and age how does a ship with all its security measures manage to sink, who is at fault, and is it likely to happen again?’

The captain was obviously prepared for this question and basically replied by saying….

‘Madam, as clever as our ships are built these days there is still a human being in control of it. I have the same hands as you, if you are capable of making mistakes then so am I’

Since this disaster many new procedures have been put in place to help this kind of situation happening again.
