Bath scrubbed up well!

We headed down to Bath earlier this week for an overnight stay to explore the City. As we exited the M4 our car broke down, our beloved Peugout headed back to the Midlands towed by the heaven sent Green Flag man and we called a taxi to pick us up from the Motorway exit, we finally arrived at our Guest House two hours later than planned. Hey ho, onwards and upwards.

We stayed overnight at Dorien House, a beautiful Guest House 10 minutes stroll from the centre. Our room was called Duke Ellington, we headed down a staircase into the cellar where we found ourselves in a turret shaped cellar room decorated in a South African style with reds and golds, Zebra striped chairs and dark furniture, the stay was topped off with an excellent breakfast. A great find which I’d definitely recommendIMG_0439IMG_0418IMG_0420IMG_2074IMG_0435IMG_0436

We headed out to a great Moroccan restaurant recommended as it catered well for vegetarians, with over 90 restaurants to choose from in Bath you really are spoilt for choice.

After checking out the following morning we stored our luggage at a Barber shop opposite the train station for a very reasonable £3 for the the day and set off to explore.

We made our way to the famous Roman Baths in the centre of the City, parts of the site dated back to 43AD, it was truly breathtaking. For £15 per person we were provided with a self touring cell phone which reeled off interesting commentary when you reached specific destinations. Excavations still take place today throughout the site.

IMG_0471IMG_0446IMG_0442IMG_0478We took a City tour for an hour which pointed out all the famous spots including Sally Lunn’s, the oldest house in Bath dating back to 1482. If you are a shopaholic you could spend a fortune, Bath had every retail shop imaginable as well as a huge variety of unusual independent business’ too.

Finally we spent an hour in Bath Cathedral, I’m not the most religious of people but I could have easily spent the whole day here, the architecture and stained glass were stunning.

If you fancy a short UK overnight break I can safely say Bath comes highly recommended by us.
