Should you be kicked off a ship for not attending the muster drill ?

It was recently reported that an elderly couple were kicked off the Seabourn Sojourn for refusing to attend the muster drill.  Safety procedures on cruise ships have been in the spot light this year since the Costa Concordia incident and cruise lines are taking safety very seriously at the moment, as they should do.

I am sure that most of us who have cruised have seen people that can’t be bothered to go to the muster drill on the ship and hide in their cabin or somewhere else to avoid it, it is likely that this recent incident will make these people think twice about doing this.

I think that something like this needed to happen at some point to make certain people take cruise safety matters more seriously, after all the muster drill isn’t that bad is it ?

Of course it is not a given that you will be kicked off a cruise for not attending the muster drill, the “laws of the ship” and punishments are ultimately deceided by the captain.

There have also been previous reports that I have blogged about of passengers being kicked off a ship for smuggling on alcohol, although I never got confirmation if that was 100% true or not.

I certainly have been told on the rare occassion by some of my passengers that people have been kicked off for bad behaviour, you know the “family from hell” type scenario.

What do you think ?  Do you think that the rules and punishments are too strict or too leanient on cruise ships ? Do you think that as there are no set laws and procedures the whole system is unfair, or do you think that they have “the laws of the ocean” about right ?

  1. I think this rules and punishments are not too strict or too leanient on cruise ships. AS it is for safety. It should be treat very seriously. The travels should know these at the time of cruise reviews.
