Cruising with your bike

several bicycles to rent

I was chatting to a passenger of mine the other day who just returned from a cruise and one of the things he mentioned was he was disappointed that they didn’t have any bicycles on the ship for hire.  I told him that this isn’t something that the cruise lines really do although there are some river cruise lines that keep bicycles on board for passenger use.

I did explain that bicycles can sometimes be hired at the port or excursions can be booked which include them.

Then we got onto the subject of taking your own. Well it seems that on a Southampton based cruise this might well be possible. I checked with P&O Cruises for example and this was their response…

Can I take my bicycle on a cruise?

ANSWER = Yes you can, however your bicycle must be stored in your cabin and you would need to carry it on and off the ship yourself. Please note, though, that additional storage space is limited in most standard cabins and we can not allocate wheelchair accessible accommodation to passengers bringing bicycles. Additionally, bicycles cannot be carried on charter flights, and other scheduled air carriers may also refuse to accept bicycles for travel.

There is no facility to hire bicycles on board our ships however there may be shore excursions arranged depending on your itinerary.

Please note that we cannot accept bicycles, or similar items, as mobility aids for use on board or ashore. Passengers requiring aids to mobility must bring their own wheelchair or mobility scooter and must notify us of their intention to do so prior to travel.

I haven’t spoken to any of my clients that have done this although a foldaway bike like the one pictured above would seem to make more sense than a full sized mountain bike for example.

I guess you could just take a lock on the bike to lock it up on shore if necessary too, you could certainly cover a lot more ground on a bike and it would be good exercise as well.

I have never seen any clientèle on ocean going ships with bikes on board, I wonder if this happens very often ?
