Cruise Ships get a blasting.

I do not know if you all managed to watch the Dispatches programme on channel 4 last week but my, what a can of worms that opened. It went into great detail about the pollution and waste levels created by our Cruise Ships. They measured the air quality on board against the air quality within Piccadilly Circus in Central London and the ship came out over double. Claiming that one ship emits as much particulate matter as a million cars.

It then went on to discuss the unregulated disposal of “grey water” from sinks and showers. This is believed to have the same enviromental impacts as sewage.

Certain Lines and ships were actually named and shamed which then forced the rest of the market to look even closer into enviromental technology to significantly reduce sulphur oxides and soot.

Cruise Lines International Association, CLIA was established back in 1975 and is the world’s largest cruise industry trade association which provides a unified voice and leading authority of the global cruise community. CLIA supports policies and practices to ensure a healthy and safe ship environment. So obviously they too are heavily involved and have announced a new generation of eco-friendly ships are on the way with 87 due to be fitted or even refitted with alternative fuel options. Members of CLIA have invested over a million dollars to help with improvements.

We have had lots of different reactions with some customer refusing to cruise again and others ready to embrace the changes.
