Germans Better Cruisers Than Brits

The UK is renowned for its booming cruise industry, with millions of British holidaymakers sailing to a number of exotic destinations each year. But during a recent presentation at ITB Berlin, it was revealed that the UK’s position as the second largest ocean cruise market could soon be overtaken by Germany.

Figures from Clia Germany show that last year, 1.77 million German holiday goers embarked on a cruise, marking an increase from the 1.7 million Brits who took to the seas from the UK the previous year.

The UK cruise market figures for 2014 are set to be announced at the four-day Cruise Shipping Miami exhibition and conference (March 16th-19th), Clia UK and Ireland said.

Over recent years, the UK cruise market has grown relatively slowly. In 2012, 1,701 million Brits took an ocean cruise, with this figure rising to 1,726 million the next year – marking an increase of 1.5 per cent.

In contrast, the German cruise market has seen a five per cent rise since 2013, TTG Digital reports.

During the ITB Berlin presentation, Seamus Conlon – managing director of Cruise.co.uk – said: “I think Germany was underrepresented before. Its population is much bigger than the UK.

“The UK cruise market grew faster than the German market, but given the size of Germany, it’s unsurprising , in the same way I would never expect us to be larger than the US market.”

Mr Conlon added that he expects P&O Cruises’ new Britannia and Anthem of the Seas vessels to spark greater interest among the UK market. However, from a long-term perspective, he anticipates the German audience will eventually overtake.

How do you feel about the German cruise market taking the UK’s spot?
