My Greek Wedding – Part One

This weekend my son is getting married. How very strange it is to say that after all he is 30 this year!  I hope other mums out there know what I mean and where I am coming from. All of a sudden your child is an adult, where did the years go. Stuart is marrying a wonderful girl whose parents are both Greek Cypriot hence the Greek wedding!

I know what to expect as last year we went to Stavrini’s sisters wedding which was fantastic, boy do they know how to party!  For a start a greek wedding is usually huge, it is not unheard of to have 400 guests however, that is in Greece.  This wedding is rather more intimate with I think about 200 guests.  The wedding itself is in a beautiful Greek Orthodox church. The ceremony will be lovely. What I like is they include the parents and the grandparents and after they are married, the guests all queue to give their best wishes to not only the bride and groom but to us as well.

Once we have had the photos and meal the night really hots up.  Fantastic greek music with some great dances. There is no pinning of money on the wedding dress anymore, I guess because the dresses are so expensive. Nor is there any plate smashing, for health and safety reasons. What we will have though is dances with all the men, then I have to do a dance with Stavrini’s mum, with a handkerchief. I have practised a little, and everyone says my dancing is fine, I hope so!

Every guest then gets a opportunity to dance with the bride and groom and also throws money at them. This I hear is for the Greek band. No presents as such, there will be a letter box for people to put cards and gifts in. After that it will be more dancing, both to Greek and English music.

My part 2 next week will I hope include some photos. Trying not to be too emotional but i know I will be!

Till next time x
