Is Cyprus The Next Big Destination?

We all love sailing around the Eastern Med, it has so much history and diversity. One of the largest islands in the Eastern Med is Cyprus, a lovely island yet there are not many cruises that sail from there, why? I think it would be a great destination to perhaps have a stay there before you cruise.

At the beginning of this month it was however announced that a brand-new cruise terminal is to be  launched in the port of Limassol with space to accommodate up to three 350-meter cruise ships at any one time. This is going to be from September this year, although if that does happen it remains to be seen.  The cruise lines who will call at the new terminal so far are Fred Olsen, Regent Seven Seas, Holland America Line, Viking Ocean Cruises and Thomson Cruises.  Thomson cruises do have a bit of a vested interest in Cyprus as they currently sail from Limassol on the Spirit on a nice itinerary in the winter.

I do like the comments from the general manager of DP World who states – “With the opening of this new terminal, all our visitors will enjoy an even more impressive welcome. DP World Limassol continues to promote the development of tourism in Cyprus and driving economic benefits for the local and national economy. This is an exciting time for Limassol and Cyprus and DP World Limassol is focused on delivering a long-term legacy creating employment opportunities and helping Limassol reach its potential of becoming a fully-serviced home port for cruise ships.”

Why are there no other cruise lines though that feature Cyprus as a destination to leave from? I am puzzled, you would think it would be ideal.  Of course, there are so many factors involved, not just a cruise terminal, let’s face it, at the end of the day it is all about money!  I do hope that cruising from Cyprus does kick off and not just on the odd date. it is afterall, a great destination in both summer and winter. Let’s see if it happens!
