Comfortable Silence

Earlier this year a major Indian Airline announced a new ‘quiet zone’ for its premium seats, meaning that children under the age of 12 aren’t allowed in those areas to allow business passengers a quiet family free area

The airline have stated: ‘Keeping in mind that the comfort and convenience of all passengers, row numbers 1-4 and 11-14 are generally kept as a Quiet zone on IndiGo flights. These zones have been created for business travellers who prefer to use the quiet time to do their work.’

Anyone that has been on a flight has no doubt witnessed crying babies and noisy children and we have all silently begged that we would be seated away from these families, a typical response was posted on Cruise.co.uk website in response to this announcement

”There’s NOTHING more irritating than sitting and paying for your personal seat than being bombarded by unnecessary noise, screaming, shouting and parents doing absolutely nothing about it! I hate it, absolutely hate, not only on aircraft but in restaurants also! It’s a jolly good idea that children and parents have their own designated area. If you had an aircraft filled with just children and parents, maybe, maybe, other parents would see and hear the disturbance’s and be shocked by witnessing how horrid it is and unnecessary. Their is a gross lack of discipline”

I do believe this is a positive move – after all we have quiet free zones on trains  free from irritating mobile phone ring tones and loud conversations and the annoyance of sitting next to someone with headphones on so loud that you can hear their music, however I believe this is a positive move for the parents and children – NOT for the other passengers

I have a 3 year old daughter, maybe I am in the minority but I am always mindful of other people, for instance on a Celebrity cruise this year I booked a Suite and our dining was in the Luminae Restaurant, my daughter was very lively and was singing and playing with the salt shaker and was talking to our fellow diners – all very light hearted – but I did not want her behaviour to spoil other diners evenings so we cut our meal short after 2 courses

If there had been a separate designated family area in the restaurant I could have had a far more relaxed and enjoyable meal as I would not have felt that we would have been disturbing other diners

I think this goes the same for child free areas of flights – if passengers want peace and quiet let them book the quiet zones, they cannot then complain or shoot those filthy ‘can’t you control your child’looks in our direction if our ‘little darlings’ are noisy in the main area of the plane and we will ALL have a more comfortable journey

I am all for quiet and child free areas EVERYWHERE! cinemas, trains, pubs, hotels and ships – unfortunately children are not always seen and not heard – so if you want child free please have it and don’t be outraged when you hear a crying baby then mothers like me will no longer have to be hushing, shushing, pacing and apologizing for daring to bring our babies and children on board!!
