Venice Stunning here is some tips ….

Hi everyone, I have just recently visited Venice on Oceana and wanted to share some tips and hints to make the most of your time there. Due to fog we were overnight there so had a lot more time to explore. There is a lot of walking involved to see all the wonderful sites here but you can get around that.

Whilst on board we payed £16 per person for a day water taxi , (use as many times as you like) but this simply takes you from the ship port to near St marks square and the rest is up to you. If like me you do not want to do too much walking but like to see as much as possible then the  the hop on hop off water bus and its a very reasonable price too (we can add to your booking for you) , they do a 1 day and 2 day pass.

The price of the Gondolas was 85 euro so better to book before you go. We have them a lot cheaper. The queues were long too.

The places to see have to start with St Marks square (do not eat or drink or even sit down in the square it may cost you a small fortune!!). The St. Mark’s Basilica is stunning and they have live orchestras playing in the restaurants around the square, it was beautiful.

I think the The Bridge of Sights and the Doge’s palace also worth a visit , Again the queues for the Palace were really long, maybe book ticket online before you visit. The Doge’s Palace was the residence of the Doge (the ruler of Venice) and also housed the political bodies of the state, including the Great Council (Maggior Consiglio) and the Council of Ten. The Bridge of sighs runes from the court house to the prison.

The thing that is is most seen in the shops around Venice is the Murano glass, it is simply stunning, it comes in all stiles and colours. Some of the shops will ship it home for you as well. If you imagine Aladdin’s cave then this is what it would be like.

The glass factory is famous the world over and all pieces carry a life time guarantee , one word of warning, by all means visit the factory, but save your buying for back on the Island of Venice itself, you will find much cheaper. we found a lovely store on the fare side of the Realto bridge and got a lovely discounted price. they sell everything from vases to tea sets to statues, all in amazing colours. so something to suit everyone. We even found a little squirrel for my son in law who’s nickname is squirrel.  I purchased a vase and my husband bought a sailing ship, really heavy but the man wrapped it well and we put in the middle of the suitcase and it was fine. Lucky for us our cases were not weight on the return flight.

I sort of mentioned the Rialto Bridge , but it is a wonderful piece of architecture. It has shops both sides as you walk up the middle and down the other side. fantastic jewellery shops. Again shop around for this.

As you can see lots of different styles and colours. The other thing in abundance are the mask shops and stalls. On the evening when the shops were all lite up, they looked stunning . You will find the prices vary depending on the style and size.

So that is my little update on Venice.

Why not do a couple of days stay there then sail from there. That way you do not miss all the wonderful treasures hidden in the back streets.

One last tip, stay in Mestre area not on the island the hotels are cheaper and you wont end up having to carry a suitcase across bridges and up stairs due to the water taxis not being able to get close to the hotels. There are lots of bars and restaurants in that area and if you speak to me I will recommend a hotel that is right opposite the train station, 20 mins to Venice Island.
