A very British Sunday

This weekend I had a truly British Sunday with all of my family.

Each year to celebrate the harvest and raise funds for the local community Belbroughton holds it’s annual Scarecrow Festival. The event which has been  going for over  20 years is now visited by over 10,000 people who flock to the village to see scarecrows.

Now as you can see they are not just ordinary scarecrows but very elaborate ones and each year they follow a particular theme. This year’s theme was ABC – authors, books and characters.

The majority of families in Belbroughton make a scarecrow and the village school and church get involved too. There are probably around 100 different scarecrows on display.

This year sees the 100th anniversary of Roald Dahl’s birth and there were a number of BFG’s to celebrate this fact. I particularly liked this cheeky chap.

Another of my favourites was Miss Havisham from Dickens’ Great Expectations.

As you can see the village makes a huge effort for this two day event and as well as the scarecrows there is live music, an air display and a classic car show. The shone for us too and to top the day off I entertained my brother and his family and my parents with a huge apple crumble using apples from my garden.  It really was a truly British harvest weekend.

This event occurs on the last weekend of September every year and I really would recommend a journey out to it for anyone in the Midlands area. And if you let me know that you’re coming, I’ll make you a crumble.
