Mixed feelings about Royal’s Lifeguards

Interesting news from Royal Caribbean – they are going to be introducing Lifeguards to their fleet of ships and starting with Oasis of the Seas. With their management saying  ‘We are a family brand, pool-based fun is an important aspect of the cruise vacation for all guests, and we are doing everything we can to ensure they have the safest vacation possible’. With each parent being present in the pool with their child. Ok management when was the last time you went on one of your ships and saw every child with a parent with them in the pool?

They are going to have a 15-minute water safety presentation during the Adventure Ocean open house session on embarkation day – How many parents will be attending?

Management are also saying ” that lifeguards are not meant to replace the watchful eye of a parent”

Now forgive me if I sound a tad cynical & I do have children of my own,  but I have been on a number of Royal Caribbean ships in the last few years and would describe the situation regarding children on board as interesting, child care seems to go out of the window when families get on board, my last sailing on Independence last year I would describe pretty much as St Trinian’s at sea.

So although in theory it sounds like a fabulous idea Royal Caribbean i’m not too sure at the minute and I guess the proof is in the pudding, and yes I do think the Lifeguards will replace the watchful eye of some parents – not all of them but a fair few.

So it will be very interesting to hear about the Lifeguard and how they get on – i’m sure we will find out sooner or later how this project pans out.

Let me know your thoughts as always
