One side of the city to another without getting wet for just 70p

Its always the same, you go out for the day without a brolly in toe-less shoes and what happens? The heavens open. In the UK quite often we’ll dash into the shops and try to wait it out or end up getting back home looking like a drowned rat. And really, the rain we get here is nothing compared to other places in the world.

Whilst in Singapore where it usually rains daily we were very lucky as it only rained one evening, but boy did it rain. I have never seen lightening and rain or heard thunder like it. Had I not known better I could have been forgiven for thinking it was the start of World War 3. It was deafening!!

Those of you that follow me on Facebook may have seen that we had to call off our first attempt at visiting the ‘Gardens by the Bay’ where we had hoped to see the Super Tree Garden all lit up and the music and light show put on each evening. No sooner had we gotten at the bridge to embark on our crossing to the gardens the heavens opened. We did the British thing and waited under cover for 15 minutes or so but it soon became very clear that the rain wouldn’t be easing for some time. We did have our umbrellas and rain macs with us but they were no match for this storm so we admitted defeat and retreated.

We had a little think and planned out our journey back with as little effort (and rain) as possible. From the bridge at the trees there is a covered walk way which leads to the stairs. Down the stairs and across a long subway style tunnel you come to the Bayfront Metro station. Having already paid 70p for our return journey we hopped on the Metro with a quick change of train en route and ended up back at the Outram Park station which is connected by an elevator to the Dorsett Hotel where we stayed.

In just 15 minutes we were back in our hotel warm and cosy and hadn’t had to get our feet wet once. We changed station mid way through but if we hadn’t wanted to go straight back we could have left the Gardens through the Marina Bay hotel which in its own ‘basement’ has several floors crammed with shops where you can pick up your Michael Kors bags, Rolex watches, Victoria’s Secret treats and much more. Or you can take to the pavements above, most of which are covered overhead all the way to Clark Quay where you will find a huge selection of covered shops, bars and restaurants.

So in Singapore when it pours, choose the right hotel and use your noggin and you can stay completely dry whilst still making the most of your stay! Not the be all and end all of course, but us ladies do like to keep the barnett dry 🙂
