Viking River Cruises – Award Winning Food!

Knowing that river cruise ships are much smaller and given that the facilities are smaller, you might be forgiven for thinking that the food on board is going to be nowhere as good, or varied,  as on an ocean cruise, you would be wrong! I must admit, having seen the size of the galley on a river cruise ship I was astonished because the food that they produce in such a confined space is superb. You will honestly find something for every palette at each meal on board.

Viking is one of the best known river cruise lines and having sailed with them I can see why they are at the top of their game. Being a big foodie meal times were an absolute joy for me honestly.

Breakfast could be as hearty or healthy as you wished and can be eaten in the restaurant or on the outdoor Aquavit Terrace, weather permitting. Everything from a full English, to home-made pastries and pancakes, fruit, a daily smoothie, and of course what cruise would be complete without an egg station with freshly prepared omelettes.

Lunch is also buffet style although certain regional specialities, which vary each day, can be ordered from the menu. Each day the menu items will reflect the area that you are currently cruising through, I have never got over the delicious meatloaf served with a savoury gravy in Austria as we sailed from Melk to Durnstein, it really was heaven!

Dinner is a real treat on a Viking river cruise, all waiter served, and as with lunch it is accompanied by local wines and beers all included in your cruise fare. The atmosphere in the restaurant is buzzing as you chat with fellow cruisers about your days adventures, the places you have visited and the things you have learned about those places from your tour guide. That, and just generally enjoying the company of these wonderful new aquaintances you have met on board.

Here is an example of a typical dinner menu on board:

First Course

Smoked Salmon Carpaccio and Salmon Caviar/Potato Crusted Mascarpone Cheese with Truffle Sauce/Baby Rocket and Watermelon Salad/Roasted Tomato Soup

Main Course

Chateaubriand/Caramelised Sea Scollops/Courgette Baked with Goats Cheese and Sundried Tomato

Desserts

Mascarpone nad Sour Cherry Cake/Brownie Streusel/Iceaa Cream with assorted sauces/Cheery Sorbet/ Fruit Platter/ Cheese Platter

In addition to the above, dishes always available every evening are: Sauted Fillet of Salmon, Caesar Salad, Roasted Chicken Breast, Seared New York Steak.

All main courses are accompanied by fresh seasonal vegetables.

What’s not to love?!

As always, until the next time, happy cruising folks!
