A Perfect Summer’s Afternoon…………..

tractor pulling

What better way can there be to spend a warm and sunny afternoon in August than visiting a Country Fair? Last October some good friends of mine moved away to the small market town of Tenbury Wells in North West Worcestershire. On the first Saturday in August the town holds it’s annual Agricultural Show so a group of us decided to go along – and what a wonderful day we had!

The weather could not have been better, a little too hot to be honest. We made an early start and to be honest it’s a good job we did as there was so much to see. After 5 hours we still hadn’t seen everything. There was everything from events in the arena’s, there were six of these. Annimal judging, the National Tug of War competition, ferret racing, dogs agility and dogs rounding up ducks, stalls selling various country wares, food tents selling local produce, old vehicles on display, and perhaps best of all Tractor Pulling.

I first came across Tractor Pulling many years ago at Welland Steam Rally near Malvern. Tractors pulling a long trailer with a huge weight on that gradually moves towards the front of the trailer. The tractor has to go as far as it can, as fast as it can, and I don’t think there are any other rules than that. It is very entertaining to watch and also very noisy and dusty if the ground is dry. Great fun!

We ambled around the stalls, chainsaw wood carving, Hedgehog Rescue, creepy crawlies in glass cases, rare breed pigs and sheep, birds of prey. There was something for everyone, all with a very ‘country feel’. There was a huge bouncy castle slide, a rock climbing wall and go karts for the children too.

We started the day with a delicious bacon sarnie, locally produced bacon of course, and a cup of coffee, and then after watching the tractor pulling we indulged in pork baps, again locally produced. Naughty but very, very nice indeed it has to be said. Whether on land or sea I just can’t resist food, it’s my big weakness.

One of my favourite pastimes at an event like this is the people watching. I find it fascinating – us humans come in all shapes and sizes you know! It’s a pastime I love to indulge in while on cruise ships too, especially on Formal Nights. Not everyone goes out and spends a fortune on new clothes for every cruise. You will see the older men in their evening suit that they have had since goodness knows when, looking well past it’s best, and ladies in a beautiful evening dress accompanied by a pair of sandals that you would wear to do the gardening. Brilliant stuff!

All in all a thoroughly enjoyable day out and one that I would heartily recommend. If you are in the area next August the Tenbury Wells Agricultural Show takes place on the 5th. Well worth the £10 entrance fee.

Afterwards, armed with purchases of local assorted cheeses and various other goodies, we headed back to our friends recently acquired country pad, which it must be said is idyllic at this time of year, for ice creams and to acquaint ourselves with their new pets! More of that, and my attempts to overcome a lifelong phobia in my next post!

Happy Cruising folks!
