Just What Is Black Friday?

Next week sees the return of the bonkers American import, ‘Black Friday’

Now correct me if I’m wrong here, but 5 or 6 years ago, nobody in this country knew what on earth Black Friday actually was! Some still don’t!

In fact I reckon if you asked a bunch of Brits the definition, they would probably just say it’s a big day for sales in America that we have adopted. And yes, to a degree that’s correct, but why is it called Black Friday?

Well, whilst most people that have an understanding of the definition believe it to mean the first sales day of the year, companies registering the first profit of the year, or going from in the red, to the coined term, ‘in the black’ – hence Black Friday, which began in the 1980s. The term was actually created some twenty years earlier in Philadelphia and was a term used to describe the large amount of shoppers and cars creating more pollution and disruption the day after Thanksgiving.

So there you go, Black Friday defined!

But why have we adopted it in the UK?

Two reasons, the main reason of course being money obviously. With a lot of companies here being owned in America, it makes perfect business sense to capitalize on potential profit.

Second reason is of course, that the fiscal year starts and ends in October for many businesses, so getting off to a good start to the financial year is key to a lot of businesses.

With people buying their presents earlier and earlier every year, retailers and shoppers alike are both getting what they want, profit, and bargains.

So as a cruise agent for a British company that sells primarily American based cruise lines, I can safely say that next week is going to be bargain week. Look for the adverts thick and fast people! We will be emailing them out to you, so if you are not signed up with me, it’s in your interests to get in touch ASAP so you don’t miss out on what could be some of the best cruise deals all year!

Cruises at all shapes and sizes will be marketed with a better than average price, so don’t miss out, get in touch and register with me today, you’ve only got a week to do it!

I’m waiting to take your call on 0800 408 6131, or just respond to this blog and I’ll call you.

Thanks for reading, have a great week, and to all our colonial cousins across the pond, have a wonderful Thanksgiving and a successful Black Friday!

As always, until next time………
