My Mums first cruise experience

Last week My mum did something she said she would never do. She stepped foot on board a cruise ship. Since I was born 34 years ago we have only ever been on one holiday abroad with the family. This was nearly 30 years ago now. We went on a short flight to Ibiza and Mum vowed to never do it ever again. The problem with my Mum is that she doesn’t like to be restricted and she wants to know she can get off if needs be. This is why flying is not ideal for her. I mean you cant exactly get off while in mid air. This is why I thought a cruise would be ideal for her. I know what your thinking here you cant get off a cruise either unless you fancy a swim. (She is a very good swimmer as it happens). However You have got the freedom to get fresh air if you want it or an option to lie down if you are feeling a bit queasy. Everything about cruising is perfect for my Mum. Delicious food. Tick. Fancy Chandeliers. Tick. West end style shows. Tick.

Me and my wife have been trying to persuade her for years to give it a go explaining how much she would love it. The first obstacle I had to overcome was the fact she didn’t have a passport. That’s when I had a brain wave. Why don’t I book a ship visit???. This way she would have to get a passport and also she could get to see what the inside of one of these cruises is really like. My Mum had mentioned she had done a cruise before back from the Canary islands. This was before I was born so i’m pretty sure things had changed a lot since then. So I booked it. £25 per person to include a full tour of the ship and Lunch. Mum got her passport and we were ready to go. The day arrived and we turned up to the port. There was a slight delay getting on due to bad weather conditions the day before. (Mum asked if she should take any travel sickness tablets just in case) “Oooh yeah you better had. This 100 thousand tonne ship may be rocking all over the place while it is tied to the dock” We got on board after about 45 minutes and she was like a kid in a sweet shop. My mum loved every minute of it. I’m surprised I didn’t find her in the hot tub. Im sure I would have if she had her cozzy. I’m still not 100% certain mum would sail on a cruise however we are going to go on more visits and I may even book up a 2 nighter. All in all it was a great day out and cant wait to do another one with her.
