Cruise Line over Itinerary or Itinerary over Cruise Line?

So over the last few weeks I have been speaking to a lot of customers who say that they prefer to book a cruise based on the cruise line rather than the itinerary. My, how times have changed as when i used to start selling cruises it was purely based on the itinerary and what the cruise had to offer.

You may have seen in the last few weeks in regards to my blog about Smarter packages and being able to see and stay in the resort before cruising? However as cruise lines seem to be getting ever much more popular a lot of customers will ask for you to search for for a cruise based on the cruise line itself. Not so much based on the itinerary.

It seems to be getting more popular for customers to seek out a cruise based on previous experience and on-board activities rather than the destination itself. I can see that cruising has become such a growing market that a lot of customers may have already been to a lot of the ports of call so they purely base it on the cruise line itself and what it has to offer.

Royal Caribbean seems to be one of the highest requested cruise lines that a customer would ask for rather than asking for certain destinations. As cruise lines get bigger and better are more customers wanting the experience on-board rather than the cruise destination itself?

Personally, in the last 9 years I have been on 7 different cruise lines and based my decision on the destination itself. However I am sure given time and the more cruises that I go on may deter my choice for which cruise line I decide to cruise on. Although I would say Azamara and Holland America are my favourite so far.

I am sure a lot of customers still prefer destination over cruise line but both are big parts that play in making your decision on booking your next cruise. And also speaking to an adviser who has cruised on particular cruise lines also helps in your decision. What are your thoughts? Are you more of a cruise line over destination or are you destination over cruise line?
