Cabin: Outside Occasion: Birthday
We went on the Viking pride from Passau to Budapest a seven day cruise. Transfers were good even though our flight was 3 hours late (thanks BA!). The cabin (smallest in the bottom of the ship..two for one offer) was small but adequate. It had a window at high level only just above the water line...interesting to see swans swimming by! It could be noisy when the water splashed up against it. It was clean and well serviced. There was a general problem though that the temperature in all cabins seemed to be difficult to control, it could be very cold or very warm and hard to keep a comfortable level. more expensive cabins were bigger and looked very good although the ones on deck three (most expensive) were on the way to breakfast and may have been noisy from 7 to 9. Deck 2 looked to be the best.
The included shore excursions were very good..half days to point out the city highlights than spare time to explore whatever you were interested in. Also all tours used radio headsets so no one missed out on the commentary and you could window shop or wander off but not lose touch...excellent!
Food was variable..sometimes very good and sometimes not so interesting (underseasoned). There was always a choice of steak, salmon and caesar salad though if you did not like the menu. Breakfast only ran to 9am so you had to get up early if you wanted to eat before lunch! and there was no room service alternative..it would have been nice if some food could have been served until ten for those of us who wanted a lie in. Wine was also included and this was ok but nothing to write home about.
generally the ship was very pleasant and some entertainment was laid on...but often we were in port so it was possible to spend the evening ashore...in Vienna and Budapest there was time to go to the opera so book your tickets in advance on the internet! Also in Linz we had time to spend the evening in town which as it was xmas market time was beautiful.
Service generally was good although the receptionists could be a little vague at times.
Overall I would recommend this cruise and cruise line ..we had a good time and liked the ship, ports of call, most of the food and the people on it....mostly english speaking..uk, australians and americans.

Comment by Roberts, Lichfield (17 Apr 11 09:46) about this REVIEW
What the writer did not mention was the awful cold weather. We think Viking gve us excelent service but the cold in central europe was far worse than in England.. We will not go on a December cruise again. Apart from that it was an excellent trip. Only a handful of Brits on board - 90% were americans who, en masse, can be a bit noise....Roberts Lichfield
Question by Crane, Harden (31 Dec 10 07:27) about this REVIEW
We are thinking of booking the same trip for next December and have seen an offer for £845 per person in a cat E cabin. Would we regret it if we booked that category - is it noisey, claustrophobic etc? Or should we stretch to £1495 each for a cat b or c? We don't want to waste our money, but dont want to be disappointed either.
Answer by elaine, london (31 Dec 10 21:36) to a QUESTION by Crane (31 Dec 10 07:27)
i think cat e was where we were....and it was perfectly adequate..the other categories are larger and have large windows but as most time is spent in port, personally I would spend less on the cabin and more enjoying yourself on land. The space differential is quite big though so if you don't like small cabins this may not be for you. The window did give some light but there was some noise from the river when the boat was on the fast water...we really enjoyed the ship and would go again if we find another offer..I suppose your decision is really whether you can justify another £600 each for the better cabin...we would not hesistate to book a small cabin again.
