This was our very first cruise, opted for just the one week just in case I hated the ship and after reading mixed reviews and reading about the ships decor I decided to play it safe and book for just the one week!

We left from Manchester, quick easy efficient Thomson staff at Manchester aiport, flight was fine, plenty of on board entertainment. Arrived La Ramona, transfers from airport to pier were slow, but to be fair two plane loads of cruisers had just landed! We arrived at port and because we had prebooked our cabin (3017) we stood in the one que which was long but the Thomson staff dealt with it quickly and efficeintly. We were even offered ICE Cold drinks/water whilst waiting, which was nice! Boarded the ship, I was feeling optomistic at this point, when we got to the third floor walking towards our cabin there was a terrible smell that stayed the duration of the cruise! Our cabin was TINY and DATED - I was disappointed. The horrid blue basin, the chipping decor, the shower curtain was my pet hate, hahaha! But this was going to be our "home" for the next 7 nights so I decided to make the best of it. Our Stewardess Tina was lovely, she did her best, but I found loads of dust by the window (is that what its called on a ship, lol). This cabin was just too dated and small and my 15 year old found the bed VERY uncomfortable, my 9 year old had no complaints, mine was ok!

The food on the ship as a whole was BLAND BLAND BLAND! On shore days we ate our lunch at port, sampling the local cuisine whiche was ALWAYS FANTASTIC. The ships saving grace was their breakfast in the Seven Seas, but how could one possibly get that wrong?

The ports were EXCELLENT, and Thomson's allowed for plenty of time on shore. We didnt do any of the ship excursions, choose to do River Tubing and Emerald Pool on our own via Antours in Dominica ( EXCELLENT service and value for money) and in Tortola we booked directly with Dolphin Discovery who were running a 15% discount promotion at the time. The other ports were just for hitting the beaches (Barbados we went to Coconut Court Beach Hotel (free sunbeds and umbrellas) which has a beach bar serving drinks, happy hour and tastey caribbean food! Uncrowded and STUNNING BEACH overall, great for snorkelling. St Kitts we went to Reggae Beach a.k.a Cockelshell Beach, the food was AMAZING! Great for snorkelling and watersports.

All in all we enjoyed our cruise BUT would we ever go back on the Thomson Destiny, NO!!!! I have however just booked for 2011 with Thomsons on their "new" ship Thomson Dream.
Quality of Food1
Bland - One of the meals made me feel ill. It was a seafood dish so maybe it was a bit off! The BBQ at lunchtime was the same on the two days we ate our lunch onboard!

We were too exhuasted to go to any of these, cant comment.

We have just returned from a cruise on destiny and I couldn't see anything wrong with the food. the choice was wider and better than on P and O and Royal caribbean. Even the lido, if you didn't go when everyone else was eating was less like a cafeteria than the one we experienced on Navigator of the Seas. Entertainment is Thomson's best thing. Of course it's the same people (you're at sea, they're part of the Resident team) but their abilities and talents are great. The can can lounge is so crowded every night you find it hard to get a seat, why, if the shows are no good? However we did find that lots of people, having stuffed themselves silly, suddenly had complaints about the food. You can't please all the people all the time.

Ive been on destiny five times also when she was the sunbird, in an ideal world this dented old tub should have been scraped years ago,I'm surprised its still sea worthy, but apart from all that i cant get enough of her, just back from caribbean, as usual i had a fab holiday fantastic crew, a comedian for a captain, great shows fabulous trip on the islands, food for me was great,i love it BAD BITS ~ lost a fortune in the casino, and those bloody shower curtains, he, he

We stayed in the very same cabin over Christmas & New Year and yes it is a little dated. However, considering the price we paid we thought it was more than adequate for 3 adults. Disagree with your comments regarding the cleanliness aspect. The food on the Destiny is fantastic - plenty of choice, cooked well and served with a smile. Pity you missed the entertainment - its part of the whole cruising experience. We have cruised on both the Destiny & Spirit and in our opinion Thomson ships have a very friendly atmosphere. After reading your comments, surprised you've booked another Thomson cruise, surely the food will be very similar to that on the Destiny.

I think most pax would agree with you about the cabin, the decor and the bathroom. Beds are quite uncomfortable, especially if you were in the Pullmans. But the ship is 3* and if you expected more perhaps you should have booked with a better ship! The Thomson experience is the friendly staff, the top quality entertainment, the size of the ship and the kind of pax the ship attracts. I bet there was a friendly atmosphere on the ship, with a nice variety of people, not full of geriarics or kids and not full of the "I'm considerably richer than you" types, which you find on other cruises. I guess you will enjoy your next cruise more and you couldn't have found it that bad, otherwise you wouldn't have booked with them again.
Question by North, Huddersfield (06 Mar 10 10:51) about this REVIEW
How can you be 100% certain that it was not some of the food you ate on shore that made you ill as most of your meals were not taken on the ship ?
Answer by Masoeu, Birmingham (06 Mar 10 21:19) to a QUESTION by North (06 Mar 10 10:51)
I was fine up until AFTER I had the fish from the Seven Seas.
Comment by North, Huddersfield (07 Mar 10 11:26) about an ANSWER by Masoeu (06 Mar 10 21:19)
You must have been unlucky as I am sure many people had the fish and you would have heaerd about it if it was all the fish on the ship. I am surprised you have booked for the Dream after the issues you seemed to have. You may wish to cancel as I can tell you now that the food on all Thomson ships and this applies when they have taken on new ones is very similar.
