This was our very first cruise, opted for just the one week just in case I hated the ship and after reading mixed reviews and reading about the ships decor I decided to play it safe and book for just the one week!
We left from Manchester, quick easy efficient Thomson staff at Manchester aiport, flight was fine, plenty of on board entertainment. Arrived La Ramona, transfers from airport to pier were slow, but to be fair two plane loads of cruisers had just landed! We arrived at port and because we had prebooked our cabin (3017) we stood in the one que which was long but the Thomson staff dealt with it quickly and efficeintly. We were even offered ICE Cold drinks/water whilst waiting, which was nice! Boarded the ship, I was feeling optomistic at this point, when we got to the third floor walking towards our cabin there was a terrible smell that stayed the duration of the cruise! Our cabin was TINY and DATED - I was disappointed. The horrid blue basin, the chipping decor, the shower curtain was my pet hate, hahaha! But this was going to be our "home" for the next 7 nights so I decided to make the best of it. Our Stewardess Tina was lovely, she did her best, but I found loads of dust by the window (is that what its called on a ship, lol). This cabin was just too dated and small and my 15 year old found the bed VERY uncomfortable, my 9 year old had no complaints, mine was ok!
The food on the ship as a whole was BLAND BLAND BLAND! On shore days we ate our lunch at port, sampling the local cuisine whiche was ALWAYS FANTASTIC. The ships saving grace was their breakfast in the Seven Seas, but how could one possibly get that wrong?
The ports were EXCELLENT, and Thomson's allowed for plenty of time on shore. We didnt do any of the ship excursions, choose to do River Tubing and Emerald Pool on our own via Antours in Dominica ( EXCELLENT service and value for money) and in Tortola we booked directly with Dolphin Discovery who were running a 15% discount promotion at the time. The other ports were just for hitting the beaches (Barbados we went to Coconut Court Beach Hotel (free sunbeds and umbrellas) which has a beach bar serving drinks, happy hour and tastey caribbean food! Uncrowded and STUNNING BEACH overall, great for snorkelling. St Kitts we went to Reggae Beach a.k.a Cockelshell Beach, the food was AMAZING! Great for snorkelling and watersports.
All in all we enjoyed our cruise BUT would we ever go back on the Thomson Destiny, NO!!!! I have however just booked for 2011 with Thomsons on their "new" ship Thomson Dream.
