Our flight from Birmingham was on time and there was plenty of leg room without upgrading. The free earpieces were a nice touch as on most other airlines you have to pay for them. I was to excited to concentrate on a film, so I whiled away the long flight playing Who Wants To Be a Millionaire and Hangman.
Transferred from plane to coach and then straight to the ship. We were checked on to the ship quickly and efficiently while being serenaded by three brilliant Spanish guitar players, who I later discovered were Canta Seranata one of the resident groups on board ship.

I had expected the cabin to be small and I was not disappointed, but as we were only sleeping and showering there we did not worry to much. Our cheerful maid/stewardess Tanya was exellent, making sure we were always out when she cleaned our cabin and keeping us well supplied with toiletries etc. The chocolates on the pillow and the towel animals were a humourous touch especialy the Elephant and the Crab.

My first and only other cruise had been with Ocean Village as we prefer buffet style dining because my wife is a very fussy eater. But we were prepared to give the waiter service restaurant a try.We thought it was OK but nothing special. but decided we would rather dine in the Lido. So we had the breakfast buffet in the Seven seas restaurant as it was easier to get a table in the morning - and lunch and evening meal in the Lido. I was worried that the quality and variety of the food would not be as good as the Seven seas, but I need not have worried as in my opinion the quality and the variety were better in the Lido. My only dislike was at peak times the Lido was to small and crowded, although evenings were OK.

The entertainment on board was excellent we loved all the shows in the Can Can especialy the James Bond show. The game shows were great fun my favourites were the Generation Game,Bigheads and Mr and Mrs.
All the entertainment staff gave 100% and were very friendly and approachable at all times. The two resident groups Rhapsody and Canta Serenata were fantastic both giving 4 or 5 performances every day. Other highlights were The Take That and Spice Girls tribute disco and the Sailaway parties.

The ship itself seemed a bit old and small compared to modern cruise ships. and was a bit crowded at times, but you could usually find a sunbed or chair . We prefered to sit in the shade on deck 7.But if you like plenty of action and music the Lido deck is the place to go.

A word of warning on our first day we sunbathed on the top deck and I managed to get sunburned in a few places, luckily I had brought some aftersun, and I felt OK in the morning. I did the same thing on the Ocean Village first day so I should know better DOH!. The clouds and the sea breezes make it seem cooler than it actually is, plus I was using a factor 25 suncream so I thought I would be OK. Next day we noticed quite a few people with bad sunburn, and later in the cruise a Scottish family told us they had spent the first 3 days of their cruise in their cabin with bad sunstroke.

Did we enjoy it and would we cruise with Thomson again? A very big YES.

Question by Fryer, Gloucester (15 Mar 10 13:28) about this REVIEW
Hi, my wife and I enjoyed your review especially as we are booked on the Destiny on the 11th April and we too are flying from Birmingham. It was interesting to read that the legroom on the plane was good as we have not upgraded our seats. What was very interesting is your comment that the maid/stewardess kept you well supplied with toiletries etc, does that mean we do not have to worry about taking shampoo and shower gel etc?

Hi there. apologies for the late reply. I am pleased you liked my review. In answer to your question about toiletries.we had plenty of shower gel and soap provided, although the soap is the cheap scented variety. Plus we never ran out of loo roll, as for some reason my wife always panics when we are down to 1 loo roll.(dont ask LOL!) so take some shampoo and other toiletries. Hope you have a great cruise and enjoy it as much as we did.

This ship is excellent for warm climates - not as good when in the Med in October and November as the Lido is not ideal for cooler weather

All of the islands have similiar spectactular scenery mountains, waterfalls, beaches volcanoes, and rainforest. So it is interesting to see the difference between the French British and Dutch islands. We particulared enjoyed Nelsons dockyard and Shirley heights in Antiqua and Brimstone hill fort in St Kitts. We also enjoyed the unspoilt scenery of Dominica, but thought the footpath to the Trafalgar falls and viewing platform were to overcrowded. Altos de Chavon in the Dominican Republic is a short cheap excursion. you can get the minibus that includes admission, a few minutes walk from the ship. If you are the more active type, lots of people we spoke to on the ship enjoyed swimming with dolphins and zip wiring through the rainforest. Whatever trips you do decide to do. I hope you have a great cruise on the Destiny next January.
