I have just returned from a week's Med cruise on the Thompson Destiny and I have to say that I and my son (10) had a great time. We cruised the med for the first time in October 2008 on the Island Star and had an equally fab time then too so was expecting a lot of similarities and made lots of comparisons. Then there were 500 children on board! This time there were 45! This had its pluses and minuses so check out dates/kids facilities if this is important to you. The Destiny is slightly older than expected, which was noticed on the first day walkabout of the ship, but this quickly fades into irrelevance once you get going and start enjoying the holiday. The food is lovely and the staff, particularly in the restaurants and bars are great - very friendly and work really hard to ensure a good time. The entertainment was excellent, both during the day and in the evenings. The shows were superb and entertaining enough for a very active 10 year old boy to sit through, even an Elvis night (who is Elvis mum?) and Lloyd Webber musicals evening. We had a 2-person cabin, which was room enough for us but we had been spoilt by having a 4-person cabin on the Island Star which was much more roomy. However, there was plenty of room for clothes and storage and I can't complain about that. Despite what others have said about the beds we both slept extremely well. I suffer from insomnia yet did not have a problem on the ship; perhaps we were lucky and had good matresses. We were on deck 2; it was very quiet and peaceful and there are no real complaints I can make. Our cabin girl was not the best there was on offer, but that is down to the luck of the draw. Would I go with Thomson again? Yes, definitely - all the staff worked tirelessly to ensure a good time, and the ports of call were good but I would recommend going alone rather than with them (expensive). Would I go on the Destiny again? Possibly - nothing really wrong with the ship, and for nostalgia sake probably, but would prefer to try a newer ship - maybe the new Thomson Dream. There you go, hope that helps.
|Quality of Food|
|Breakfast - lido self service restaurant - food excellent!
Lunch - ate at the grill - again very good, and lots of choice!
Evening - Seven Seas restaurant - preferred to be waited upon but the buffet was equally good. |
|Loved the entertainment.
Ian 'Sludge' Lees was excellent.
The cult fiction evening was probably the least enjoyable simply because it went slightly over the top of the children's heads. I realise it is an adult show but there was little entertainment for children in the evening (other than kids club) so they wanted to watch the shows and this one was possibly slightly too adult.
All others were excellent.|
|Pompeii was fantastic - went with Thompson but in hindsight would have gone alone since we could have visited much more and stayed for longer - plus would have much cheaper!
Do Barcelona on your own! Much easier and cheaper.
Probably most tours would be done on own much cheaper than with Thompson, but less adventurous people will probably seek security of going with the tour guide. Better to go alone if you are brave enough.|
|Have to say I never saw the captain, so was least impressed with him!
Most impressed with the restaurant staff - they entertained and worked tirelessly. The showteam also were fantastic and did a great job. They are all very talented and entertained very well.|
|I didn't use the children's facilities despite having a 10 year old son. A previous cruise had 500 kids on board and it was difficult to get my child enrolled on activities. This time, there were much fewer children (only 45) and far fewer activities so he did not want to go. However, the staff did seem to be very enthusiastic so I cannot give them a poor rating just because we did not make use of their facilities.|
|Yes - you could do as much or as little as you pleased.|
|Yes - there were only two of us and we were in a two-berth cabin and that was ample size for us. I did hear others complaining that they were cramped - mainly where there were 4 of them, so bunkbeds above what must have been our beds, but little extra room apart from this. This must have caused a problem, but happily not for us!|
