Cruise Ship: Thomson Celebration Sailed: February, 2010
Destination: Red Sea Age: 36-45
Cabin: Suite Occasion: Wedding anniversary
At the risk of incurring the wrath of North from Huddersfield, we wanted to give our own views of the Celebration (please note, these are our perceptions which do differ from other people's)

Arrival at the ship was fine, and our cabin was a good size, though very dated, and the bathroom was not in great repair. That said, our lovely steward kept everything very well. We had good views out of our windows, and it was bright and comfortable enough. That said, we never got used to the juddering - even when in port, and when in bed you could find it a bit difficult to read as it vibrated somewhat.

The crew were all lovely - especially the phillippino crew - who learned names, little facts and what you wanted very quickly and were always friendly, helpful and very efficient. Their service couldn't be faulted.

The all inclusive drinks package was good value and very generous in their selections. The Bellinis in the Horizons bar were very nice! And it was good to find that they did slimline tonic for onboard G&Ts. Horizons had a nice atmosphere - calm and quiet, whereas Hemmingways seemed to suffer from the Brits problem of moving all the furniture so you could sit in big circles.

The food in the Meridian (main restaurant) was fine, though I wouldn't say great - not always hot, and soups and salads were very basic indeed. As someone on a restricted diet, it was sometimes difficult to get the staff to get that there were some things you did or didn't want, but when I sent things back a couple of times it was rectified fairly quickly. It was nice to share tables and we met some nice people, though did a couple of times get lumbered with people who just talked at (or even worse over) you, and were more interested in telling you about the minutiae of their lives and not even slightly bothered about you. That said, we met some lovely people - so if you can recognise us from this review, don't assume it was you!

We ate in Mistrals and that was a nice experience, though being forced to look doe-eyed at my husband while a Celine Deon song was warbled at you, despite saying no, was a bit of a downer.

The Lido was chaos - and the selection there was not good for someone like me on a restricted diet. I am usually alright with some plain meat/fish and salad, but that was very hard to come by at times! It was also chaos because there were lots of people just wandering around not knowing where they were going of what they were doing, and getting in everyone's way. It would benefit from a one-way system in there - especially during busy periods. Food was often only warm, but the omlettes out on the Lido deck were good.

The poor weather on the first day, the cancellation of the Petra trip and the day at sea meant that we were desperate to get off the boat by the time we reached Cairo. The trip (Mosque, Nile cruise and Pyramids) was good and good value - the guide was fairly good, and we learned lots about Islam. The Pyramids/Sphynx were also chaos (though better than they were at our last visit a good few years ago), and even the police were tapping you up for tips.

We did the Luxor overnight trip, which was our highlight and phenomenal value. Our guide was great (hi Mustaphah) and everything we saw was so worthwhile. The hotel we stayed in was of excellent quality and the food was far superior to that on the ship (sorry - but we do have a right to an opinion!). Being there made us dread getting back on the ship, if we're honest. The trip was long and pretty physical, so doing it over 2 days was a bonus, as we had more time to see things and weren't cramming it all in one day. If anything we would rather have seen Karnak in the daylight as well as at night, but the show there was very good.

So why not for us? I guess it's the 'Butlins at sea' thing that just wasn't us, and while we met some nice people and found lots of nice people to talk to, a lot just weren't the type of people we would usually choose to hang out with. We felt hemmed in as there was very little space to move around, and bored quite a lot of the time (though caught up on reading!). I guess that Mr & Mrs, Bingo and napkin folding just weren't to our taste, and Keith's tannoy announcements were a bit too Hi-di-Hi and very intrusive (do they need to be played in the restaurant - they make it feel even more canteeny than it already did!)

We transferred after to a very nice hotel and had a fabulous week of sunshine, space, snorkelling and really good food (much better fresh selection than on the ship). We'd love to go back to Egypt to do a proper scuba course, and to go to Petra, but we won't be cruising with Thomson again, if we cruise again at all.
Quality of Food3
No bad tummies, but it's not the gourmet food that some make it out to be.
Entertainment2
Didn't really bother after the first night. We go up to the West End a lot and had seen most of the shows they put on.
Shore Excursions5
Luxor overnight - excellent and great value
Staff4
Rain in the Lido bar was lovely from beginning to end, and the barmen in Horizons were also great.
Children's Facilitiesn/a
Onboard Activities2
Not really for us. Gym was okay, though
Cabins3
Size and facilities were fine, but we think last refurbished in 1972

Opinion: Disagree Comment by Nicholas, wirral (19 Mar 10 13:58) about this REVIEW
My partner and I are regular Thomson cruisers and would have to disagree with you on a number of points. Firstly they are not "Butlins" at sea. Bingo does take place - but when on the Celebration last June it was announced in the morning and then again shortly before "eyes down" which I think was about 5 p.m. Not even sure where it took place - it was that unobtrusive. Napkin folding is a quick demonstration by the waiters - nobody forces you to watch! There is a choice in the evening of entertainment. Horizons bar - jazz, another bar (name of which I forget) -classical, Hemingways - no entertainment (unless you want to watch the casino games), Broadway Lounge - shows and Liberties which had a live band and game shows etc. I would say something for everyone there! There is also a cinema showing a good choice of films throughout the day and evening. I have to follow a restricted diet but have never had any problem on Thomson ships. I agree that the Lido can be chaotic at popular times. Could I ask what your "type of people" are please. Surely if you had done a bit of research into prices on various cruise lines you would have seen that Thomson are at the lower end of the price bracket so therefore one would expect that you will get working class people like myself on board. However that does not mean that we are lager swilling, bingo lovers who like to fold napkins! We know how to behave and to dress appropriately. I have always found quite a good mix of guests on Thomson ships. In fact have spoken to many people who have cruised with the top end of the market cruise lines but come back to Thomson. May I say that it is also very unfair to single out one particular reviewer on this site. I know that North makes many contributions to this site and is very loyal to Thomson. Should that be a problem?

What a pity you spoiled a fairly good review with your opening comment! By and large it was a good subjective review EXCEPT how can you possibly reward the Entertainment section with 2 stars when you admit you only went to one show??? A tad unfair that!

Gosh, what an epic saga! My Hubby and myself were on a Red Sea Magic cruise in February and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was first time for us not to have a cabin with a balcony, but hey ho Why mention (twice) that you are on a restricted diet, my Hubby is also on a fairly restricted diet, but he never had reason to complain We note that you are new to cruising (!). On our same cruise, we met a couple who had crusied with Thomson F I V E times with no cause to complain. We have cruised at least 16 times with various lines and think what we paid for the Red Sea Magic cruise was good value Sandy & Huw of Worcester (OAP\'s)!!

I agree with Cross of Cambridge the people on Thomsons ships are a different clientele than Princess and P&O. They are friendlier not as stuck up and want to enjoy themselves. Most importantly they are not stuck up working class snobs

Out of curiosity what hotel did you stay at in Egypt? I am just about to book this cruise and stay holiday and dont know which hotel to choose in Egypt. I quite like \'hi de hi\' and have been on the celebration before but would like a bit of 5 star luxury in my hotel.
Comment by Crann, Northwood (16 Mar 10 23:03) about this REVIEW
For a very good cruise go on Thomsons Nile Ritz it was fantastic on the boat there are aboute 100 people so its not crwded the food is out of this world and all drinks are all inclusive . Just sit back and watch the world go by. And by the way we had a great meal in Luxor

A shame that you did not enjoy your cruise. My wife and I cruised on the Celebration some 4 years ago and found the experience most enjoyable, the food at that time fantastic and the entertainment good.A lot depends on expectations of passangers; a point which cannot be emphasised enough. From your review I get the impression that you prefer the open spaces and understand that the confines of a ship can be claustophobic. I have travelled the world in many modes and classes of transport the most generous and hospitible of people have been those who have little but are only too willing to share what they had; There friendliness and hospitality at times was overwhelming. It also requires the guests have to bend a little. On occasions things are not 100% but why let minor faults ruin an whole experincee Varities of holidays are provided by tour companies because of the variety of tastes of individuals
Comment by Cross, Cambridge (16 Mar 10 08:59) about this REVIEW
I agree that some Thomson Cruises are like Butlins at sea but that is what some people enjoy. They also like the closeness and having to mix with people of different cultures and lifestyles. As this is the cheaper end of the market you expect a different clientele than say Princess or P&O. We have done both in the past but still come back to ships like Celelration. You can easily be alone on the bigger ships but you choose your cruise by the prices and itinieries that interest you and then as you have paid good money for your holiday you make the most of whatever situation you find yourself in.
Comment by Bonnett, Billericay (16 Mar 10 01:10) about this REVIEW
I cant believe the wrath that this review has caused. The reviewer has offered his/her opinion whether you like it or not. The remark about North from Huddersfield is innocent enough - I cant believe how 'precious' people are on here. Perhaps they dont want to be associated with Butlins! The fact is Thomson cruises are at the lower end of the cruise market and by having all-inclusive drink packages unfortunately can attract the wrong type of passenger. If you dont like the review ignore it.
Comment by Ormond, Dorchester (16 Mar 10 08:53) about a COMMENT by Bonnett (16 Mar 10 01:10)
Yesterday I saw this review and all the comments even though I always sail P and O ex Southampton it piqued my curiousity and thought I would revisit it. Can you find sufficient evidence to support the original opening review remark - I had a quick look at other reviews for Thomson and I couldn\'t. If the remark was so innocent then why did the reviewer ultimately apologise for it instead of justifying or explaining it ? Whatever her reason - she can\'t really justify it so what is the point of it. Your view on Thomson is one you and others are entitled to hold and there will be plenty of people who will agree with you on that and you may have a very valid point regarding All Inclusive. Your support for the remark is, in most people\'s opinion based on the comments, at best a minority one and some will say a little misguided. Perhaps as you dislike the Thomson product you are indifferent to the criticism. If you wish to continue to support the remark by replying it would not be unreasonable to expect you to attempt to justify it with sufficient examples of the \" wrath\" as a percentage of total comments made by the \"accused \". In the end it appears from the comment made later ( the apology) and below by the reviewer ( Mrs Williams ) that she realised her unreasonableness in her review. ( we have to assume it is a lady as she refers to her husband in the review ). Whilst agreeing that it may have been intended as innocent enough, there is no emotion in the written word on here and therefore it really should not have been made particularly when there is little justification to warrant it in the first place.
