We cruised the Eastern Med on The Thomson Calypso, sailing fom Thessaloniki on a Crimean Discovery and had a wonderful time. I have cruised before with Thomson and Fred Olsen, my partner is a first time cruiser. We booked the cheap inside cabin on the lower deck but had a HUGE 4 berth which was amazing. Thomson cruises are fun with formality if you like or informality if you prefer-we ate buffet style most nights which suited us anti-social creatures! The entertainment was excellent-quite a variety with a play one evening which made a welcome change. Food cannot be faulted-great selection and plenty of it day and night(better I felt than Fred!)
Trips are always dear but if you can get about on your own we much prefer to do this, while we're mobile!
Constanta isn't worth a light!
Nessabar-pretty, quaint, do it in a couple of hours. Buy your nesting dolls here!
Sevastopol-a real highlight-unbelievable place-find Lenin's column, see the Panorama, the huge monument on the front-research well before going-there's alot to see that they don't tell you about!
Istanbul-Wow, loved this city. Gotta go there..
Weather became too windy and seas too choppy to go to Limnos, no problem, sunbathing out on deck or a visit to the gym. I really thought the cruise was excellent. Constanta let it down, but I believe cruises may miss this out in future.
The small ship was certainly more friendly and it's a shame it has gone.
I only hope they see the error of their ways in future and start reducing the ship sizes again. I think the popularity of cruising will hit a high soon and then plummet. For some people it's a case of been there, done that. The companies are just going for maximum profit now so the fun will go out of it.
Have heard bad experiences on Royal Carribbean and other biggies!
Stick with small and friendly for a better experience all round in my opinion.
Nice not to have children around too and no smoking is essential!
Y'all have fun now.
