We joined Ancient Cities in the Sand, having booked cruise only, saving us £900 each, and with no hassle booking flights to Muscat and back from Aqaba using BMI air miles and our overnight stop in Muscat using Nectar points!!!! We've done other cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean (VERY commercial :-( ) and P&O............ but Minerva, being a small ship was a welcome change. It was everything it "said on the tin": very relaxing, no razzamataz, good speakers, brilliant all-inclusive excursions, no embarrassment over tipping. Just how much would other cruise lines charge for a 14hr excursion from Massawa on the Red Sea to the Valley of the Kings, or to St Catherine's Monastary in the Sinai.... or Petra in Jordan? And not to mention our introduction to opera by "Absolutely Opera" - a group of five young operatic friends who came together just for the voyage. The crew were some of the best we've experienced: with no tipping system, they are clearly paid better basic waqes with no need for creepy a*s* licking just to get a bigger tip! VERY refreshing! Unlike larger ships, the Master knows every one of his crew personally, they work for HIM, not just for the company; this in itself helps ensure high quality. Unlike other reviews I've seen for this voyage, we found the food excellent. Sure, the food isn't in the same (indecent) volume of other cruise lines (like there's no midnight chocolate orgies!)....... but this too is refreshing...... adequate sustenance of high quality! Oh...... "and not to mention" the four nights where wine was complimentary......... and no annoying photographers in your face trying to get money out of you. Swan Hellenic come across as being generally above the median with regard to cost......... but when you realise just what you are getting for the money it really is good value. We'll certainly sail with them again.

Comment by Clement, Bridgwater (14 May 11 11:51) about this REVIEW
We have also experienced other cruise lines, Celebrity, Princess, P&O and Royal Caribbean and whilst they are obviously commercially aware, we found the staff courteous, efficient and very friendly. (I guess interpretation of behaviour can be very subjective) Minerva was our first experience of cruising on a small ship, but I would not let that put me off cruising on small ships again. I'm sure there are small ships that have modern, comfortable, purpose built facilities, e.g a theatre and quality entertainment. There was certainly no razzamataz onboard Minerva, that's for sure. Whilst we found Royal Caribbean can be a little over the top in this respect, Swan Hellenic lacked any quality entertainment, save for Absolutely Opea, who were fantastic. Certainly for us, the best part of the cruise were the all-inclusive excursions, the excursions to Massawa on the Red Sea, the Valley of the Kings and Petra were exceptional. This was particularly true given that given that we picked up the fly/cruise package at a bargain price. I think you may have misread my comments regarding the food. My critisim was based on quality, not quantity. I'm sure there was sufficient quantity of food onboard Minerva to match even the most gluttonous person's needs. However my issue was with the quality of the food that was served; as generally the evening meal was absolutely appalling. Again, this is possibly a subjective view as it must depend on individual standards. (For me, Bisto gravy is not "fine dining") Whilst one should never say never, I think it unlikely that we will cruise with Swan Hellenic again.
