We had a wonderful holiday on the Star Clipper in August. We had a 7 night itinerary sailing from Athens - we had a sea day, followed by Bodrum in Turkey, the Dalyan River in Turkey (which was an unexpected highlight; we did a great river cruise, followed by a trip to Mudbaths then the beach), Santorini, Milos, and our final port should have been Hydra but as the sea was choppy we went to Poros instead. It wasn't a problem for us as we hadn't been to either but we met one or two people who were disappointed. With the exception of Bodrum all ports were by tender.

The ship is great - it is a really lovely experience being on a tall ship when under sail. We first sailed on the Star Clipper 9 years ago, and whilst we had a lovely time, the weather and itinerary this time were so much better. We always promised ourselves we would do it again, and it was better than we remembered. We were very lucky in that we didn't see a cloud in the sky during the whole trip; arguably it was too hot for sightseeing but I don't feel I can complain about that. 9 years ago we didn't seem to sail very much; the sails were up but we motored along. The policy has very much changed and the captain is incentivised to sail - I guess as it is eco friendly, saves fuel costs and pleases the passengers. The captain was Estonian and was passionate about sailing and tall ships and gave a very interesting talk. In fact, all of the staff were very customer focussed and friendly.

Our cabin was small, but we expected that, and it was kept tidy and clean at all times. Food was always good and on occasion exceptionally good, especially during the evening of the captain's dinner. Dining is free seating, and as we were a party of four and the ship wasn't full it was usually just the four of us but occasionally we were joined by a friend we had made on the ship. There was a cocktail hour from 4-6 with savoury and sweet canapes and it was a lovely time to have an early evening drink before changing for dinner and to meet some new friends.

Entertainment was very informal, run by the watersports team and cruise director who doubled up as entertainers in the open air bar, occasionally supplemented by the odd talented crew member. It was very relaxing and enjoyable. Bar prices were very reasonable, €14 for a bottle of quite good house wine, €17.50 for a very nice bottle of sparkling prosecco.

We had a lovely time; with a great combination of sightseeing and beach trips. Highlights were the gorgeous sunsets, lying in the nets at the front of the ship, and getting up to watch the sun rise one morning; there was no-one around except the odd deck hand and it was magical.

I've never been on a big cruise ship - that will be next - and I will be interested to see how they compare!

ps - please note I selected Star Princess as the ship as I had to choose something; although Star Clippers was shown as the cruise line their ships weren't shown. The ship was the Star Clipper.
