Royal Clipper - Windward Islands
Where do I start? I booked this as a reward to myself for finishing my BA Hons in Business degree. I have always wanted to sail on a tall ship and this seemed the perfect opportunity to spend money! I was on my own as my husband gets very seasick but that didn't put me off. So I handed in my thesis on 31 March and immediately flew off to Barbados. 3 nights there at a beautiful boutique hotel up in the hills then on the the Royal Clipper. I had booked a 'guaranteed single' which meant I had no idea what sort of cabin I would be allocated until I got there. The only thing I was sure of was that I wouldn't be sharing with a stranger as I like my own space. In fact, my cabin was beautiful. Outside, with portholes, in what I came to realise was one of the better parts of the ship. I was very lucky. It was compact as you expect on a sailing ship that only holds approx 220 passengers when full but beautifully appointed in teak, brass and marble. Total delight. The steward service was amazing and turn down service brilliant. As I was sailing over Easter I also got little treats left in my cabin, such as Easter biscuits, decorated eggs, chocolates etc. Couldn't fault any of the crew; they were all very good. Food was beautifully presented and of very high quality. Fellow passengers all very friendly and as it was open seating you met a lot of people in a short time which was very good for a single traveller. Sailaway from each port was a tremendous sight with full sails and their very own theme tune blaring from the speakers (Vangelis, I think, from the film with Gerard Depardieu; the title of which eludes me at the moment!). You can go on the tender in certain ports so you can take pictures whilst the ship is in sail. Incredible sight. Although the weather wasn't that brilliant (typical Caribbean) it was still very warm and being on deck at night with the wind through the sails or just hearing the sea splash against the side of the hull was brilliant. and the stars! - to die for. Getting to and from the islands where the ship anchored (no docking apart from Barbados) was quick and easy. Trips were good and not bad value although it was very easy to do things yourself as all the islands are pretty small and easily accessible. Highlight was a champagne and lobster lunch on a deserted island after a speed boat trip. Cool! There was also sea sports equipment, such as windsurfers, dinghies and sea cats, available at some stops - beach permitting. Evening entertainment was relaxed, fun, casual and as you made it - crab races were fun! An absolutely brilliant trip and I can't wait to book my next.
