Having transited the Corinth and the Panama canals with Spirit of Adventure, we just had to go on one offering the Suez. After a few days in Cyprus we boarded the Spirit of Adventure in Limassol for back-to-back cruises to view the sites of the Nile, pass through the Suez Canal, call in on Suakin (Sudan) and Massawa(Eritrea) and then pass swiftly round the corner to Salalah, Oman and thence to Mumbai.
As ever the ship staff gave us a warm and personal greeting and the magic of this sedate ship enveloped us. The food was as good as ever, the staff outstanding, the included excursions comprehensive and informative. We went to Cairo and saw the pyramids and the exquisite gold of Tutankamun's tomb, to Karnak and the Valley of the Kings. We got up early to watch the ship entering the Suez canal and further down the African coast the highlight was a ride on a specially-chartered train in Eritrea with a visit to the war memorials of the Italian Army. There was a vast range of activities and lectures on board, including talks from members of the Antiques Roadshow team.
As we came close to Somalia the Captain briefed us very professionally, saying we would be well looked after and what to do if the worst happened. Luckily it did not happen, but we were doubly reassured by the presence of naval ships from several countries.
And then there was Mumbai: a wonderful mad, lovely city and an extremely ordered disembarkation. Some, like us, stayed a few days in Mumbai, some went tiger viewing in central India, some went home in the company of several members of staff on Christmas leave.
This was a real adventure, but even more exciting things are to come in 2011. Watch this space, because we will be there.

| Charlotte in the Pursers office not only helped with the mound of paperwork, she also always had a cheery wod with passengers as they passed the office, yet was polite and patient when necessary. | | Children's Facilities | n/a |
