Our cruise on Silver Cloud was our first back with Silverseas for about 3 years. We originally left them because their entertainment quality had deteriorated and thus we wanted to experience their current offering. The cruise was from London Bridge around Britain (Edinburgh), InverGordon, Oban, Dublin, Cork, Fowey(Cornwall) and back to London Bridge). We were fortunate on the cruise that the weather was pretty good as we were taking this trip on a fairly small ship.
We had anticipated that the ship was to be refurbished prior to the cruise (intended in May 2009) however they didn't do it. There was some replacement of carpets and they were updating TV's to flat screens while we sailed. Overall the ship was starting to look pretty tired although the main rooms in fairness still exuded the design quality that Silverseas has exemplified since it started. The show Lounge is alwasy impressive on such a small ship. The staff were very friendly and the cabin stewardess was exceptional especially as we had earlier in the year had a disasterous experience on cabin cleaning on Queen Victoria. There was talk of Silverseas starting to include Butler service with all staterooms from later this year which filled a number of us with dismay as our experience of such people is that they are largely a nuisance (sahred by a number of others when we discussed this over dinner!). The sunbeds on the pool deck were disappointing (no mattresses at all) and the small daytime Lido REstaurant was limited. However at night it was very good when it became La Terrazza- excellent service and good food. The Main REstaurant was actually very cold and most of us complained about it except the final night when it was too hot. Clearly not very well regulated. THe cruise Director (Judy) was really hardworking and fun and led by example. Humble , normal and efficient. The overall state of the ship whilst acceptable showed real signs of tireness . Wood chipped and wearing out. Only main complaint was that the main evening entertaiunment in the show lounge started at 10.15pm which was really too late particularly when you have early trips most days. The actual itinary around Britain was very interesting particul;arly the sailaway under Tower Bridge which was lifted for the occasion. Also the visit to the Edinburgh Tatoo with excellent seats was a highlight. Entertainment has improved since we stopped sailing with Silverseas ( 3 years ago) so we are looking forward to s cruise in January on the new Silver Spirit to see what that is like as we have travelled on all their other ships. Frankly Silverseas still is a 5 star cruise.
